A firm favourite with the customers who have fond memories of the days when this beer would be “mulled” using a red hot poker, to enhance it’s aroma. It is brewed using pale, crystal and black malts with a little high maltose syrup. The beer’s natural sweetness is balanced using Progress, Fuggle and Golding hops.

A warming aroma with hints of chocolate, fruit and malt gives way to a complex full palate of chocolate, fruit and liquorice. The finish is long and the overall impression is of a superbly crafted, smooth and well-balanced beer, which many will testify is deceptively strong.

Cask@Nottingham Beer Festival 2007. Black beer with a dandelion and burdock aroma and flavour. Overall an average beer.

Cask at Charlie’s Bar, Copenhagen. A dark brown beer with a red shine under a dense brown head. The aroma is sweet malty with notes of dark fruits and a light touch of prunes. The flavor is sweet with strong notes of prunes as well as lighter notes of metal from the alcohol, figs, and cocoa, a bit too much figs for me. It has a nice body.

Cask gravity at Nottingham BF 2007. Black with thin dark beige. Wow. Now that is interesting. Sour, but not off, some dark fruit, damson, plum. Very interesting. Unusual flavours and a very good beer.

(Cask at White Horse, Parson’s Green, London, 25 Nov) Dark brown, almost black, with ruby notes. Small head. Malty nose with dried fruit, raisins, prunes, red wine and a hint of wood. Malty taste with chocolate, tobacco, full flavours of dried fruit, raisins and prunes. Nice, balanced sweetness in the finish. Medium body, smooth. Very enjoyable.
