Ace of Spades Imperial IPA is a big, assertive hop bomb that won the World Beer Cup Gold in 2009. With bold pine on the nose and finish, and strong citrus notes, this fan favorite is an IPA lover’s rich, dank dream brew.

Taster showing medium amber with sparse white foam.
The nose shows moderately intense notes of tea and malty biscuit.
The palate is well carbonated and light to medium bodied. Malt forward with a moderate pine bitterness that seems to go on a bit too long.

16 oz can enjoyed. Definitely had this one several times in years past, as I remember this one featured in beer magazines as a top beer to try. Always an enjoyable imperial full of bold and bitter hops. Aroma bites hard with a grapefruit peel citrus. Sharp first sip, bold and bitter orange peel, juicy hops. A big malt backbone, but this ends up balancing out well for a beer of its potency. Some caramel linger. Listed a little more modest than past years, 8.6%. It shows on this beer, but I want it to. Really nice beer, and one I look forward to each time it hits the shelves in my local.

16oz can from Brewers Haven. Deep, clear golden, one finger fluffy head. Aroma is old school NW hops. Taste even moreso, the fresh hops bursting onto the palate, stinging, earthy, resinous. All about the hops. A nice flashback.

Optisch nichts auszusetzen, geiles Flaschendesign. Meine Variante hat aber 8,6%, Barcode ist identisch. In der Nase fruchtig, Zitrus, sehr hopfig. Im Trunk sehr cremig, fruchtig, nur ganz leicht alkoholisch, hohe Drinkability. Langer warmer Abgang, rote Beeren, Aprikose, Orangen, lecker.

22 oz bottle from Tavour. Medium/ dark golden with nice frothy head leaving sheets of lacing on the way down. Aroma comes in with a lot of grain/ malt character and a little bit of citrusy piney hops on the back end. Taste is some caramel malts, some orange citrusy hops, very very smooth. A bit of alcohol heat warms they gullet on the way down.

Clear orange beer, small irregular creamy white head, unstable, dissipates quickly. Aroma: sweet, very oxidized, malty, some cardboard. MF: soft carbon, medium body. Taste: pretty spicy, peppery, soapy bitterness, oxidized, dry. Aftertaste: soapy, unpleasant, very dry, grassy and spicy finish. So, Fontana was apparently selling 3 year old ipa's, not cool. Oh well. :p
