Heritage is Bear Republic’s Scottish Wee Heavy. The bulk of the grain bill is made up of Golden Promise malt from the UK, backed up by a blend of specialty English caramel malts. Fermented with our house strain of Scottish yeast at cool temperatures to extract a clean, yet fruity ester profile. Lightly hopped with East Kent Golding hops, this big and malty ale is true to the Norgrove Family’s Scottish Heritage, the “North Grove” of Sonoma County.

On tap at Beer Republic during SF Beer Week, what a week! Pours murky dark brown with thin tan head. The aroma offers up sweet dark fruity esters like prunes, figs and dates as well as some roasted malts and chocolate malts. The taste begins with a sweet dark fruity ester onslaught coming from all direction via prunes, raisins and figs and then picking up a modest amount of dark roasted malts, chocolate malts and a mild yet pleasing earthiness. It lingers with some chocolate and roasted malts into the finish. Pretty right on for the style.

16oz glass at Deep Ellum. Pours a translucent, mahogany brown with a creamy off white head. Aroma has pale malts, some light chocolate powder, light brown sugar, sweet. Flavor is real weak, watered down chocolate, light toasted malts, loads of crystal malt flavor. Finish is weak and water. A scotch ale? No way. This is a bad scotch ale. This wouldn’t even be a good brown ale.

Location: Draft at Rattle 'N' Hum, 9/13/09

Aroma: Caramel, a bit of scotch, some toffee, and butterscotch
Appearance: Dark caramel brown color, nice head
Flavor: Nice smooth malty and scotch flavor, mild hop bitterness
Palate: Smooth with a nice mouthfeel, minimal harshness from the scotch
Overall Impression: This is a pretty good scotch, not exceptional, but nice and enjoyable. Stays true to the style as well. The type of beer you can definitely enjoy.

Tap at Hop Devil - clear brown, purplish beer, with a pillowy, lasting head - very sweet aroma, with dough, brown sugar, light spiciness - taste is medium sweet, with some roasty notes and cocoa - light barleywine character in the form of fruity esters - herbal, bittering hops - a little bit of earthy/peat notes - light cocoa in the finish - pretty nice.
