First brewed in England, these potent, malty monsters were frequently aged before being put into small bottles and sold as strong beers or even medicinal tonics. The American version has been blown up with more alcohol, larger bottles and more hops.
Smuttynose Barleywine straddles these two branches of the barleywine tree. When you taste it, you’ll notice deep, rich caramel malt flavors, balanced with hop bitterness. Fruity hop flavors act as a garnish for its amped-up but classic flavor. For a more refined experience, tuck a few bottles away for a year or two. The alcohol will mellow and the hop aromas will fade into the background, leaving the luscious malt to shine on its own.

Smells like lemon pledge, cherries and dried mangoes. The body is fairly light, a touch of sourness. Lots of dried mangoes, cherries and oranges. Very different for a barelywine, not that bad, but very different for a barelywine. Some marshmellows there too. The sourness distracts for me.

Cloudy brown beer. Typical strong barleywine, almost salty. Strong malt and bitterish hops. Not as smooth or as lip smacking as some.

Cellared for several years. Bottle priced at $3.25 Deep copper with a minimal head. The aroma is very pleasant yet subtle. Softened alcohol, cherries, vanilla. The flavor follows the aroma. Very smooth.

Botttled. Deep rubyish amber colour, mediumsized slightly off-white head. Aroma is hops, some caramel malts, mild syrup as well as some slight toffeeish and alcoholic notes. Flavour is quite much the same along with some mild nutty notes. Ends rather sweet.

Appearance: Pours a slightly hazy reddish-amber color with a creamy beige head that leaves sheet lace
Flavor: The flavor has lots of citrus sweetness, caramel malts, and a nice pine hop feel
Palate: This is a full bodied beer with a somewhat thick, syrupy mouthfeel to it
Overall Impression: A really nice American-style Barleywine. Full flavored, big, and good. I really liked this one quite a bit. Another quality offering from the Smutty Big Beer Series. I've like pretty much everything I've had from this series, and I will continue to try them when I see them.

Tap at Pony Bar. Pours yellow-gold, mostly clear, with a strong, white head. A good amount of hops in the aroma, lots of orange citrus. Very sweet flavor, with some caramel and honey, then plenty more fruit, especially orange, lemon and grapefruit, with hints of grape. Strong, though not overbearing alcohol presence. Medium in body with lively carbonation, lightly warming. Not a typical barley wine, but still really, really good, particularly if you enjoy hops.

Pours clear copper color with minimal off white head. Fruity aroma with some caramel malts and citrus. Lots of citrus fruit flavor with some hop bitterness and caramel sweetness. Alcohol is slightly noticeable. Pretty hoppy barleywine. Medium to full body with moderate carbonaton and a syrupy mouthfeel.

Bottle thanks to Pabs311. Pours a clear dark red with a strong orange hue and a medium yellow brown head. Aroma has note of pine with an undertone of biscuits and grain. Flavor has pine notes with a undertone of sweet grains and bread. Surprisingly hoppy for a barley wine.

(Draught at Akkurat, Stockholm, 2 Mar 2010) Dark reddish amber colour with frothy, beige head. Malty, fruity, hoppy nose with dried fruit, pine needles and caramel. Malty, fruity taste with notes of caramel, dried fruit, apricots, citrus and an impressive piney bitterness in a rather vinous and warming finish. Full body and fairly sweet. A bit boozy and possibly not very balanced but with solid malt and an impressive hop presence. Tasty and warming beer. Very nice.

22oz bomber closet aged for 2+ years. Thick, murky, orange-brown color with some patchy white lace for a head. Alcohol-laced caramel aroma. The flavor is sugary sweet and buttery, shows some aging. The low almost flat lost carbonation hurts the beer a little, taking away the drinkable balance it had fresh. Not one to age out for extended periods. Woody, piny hops, syrupy sweetness. Good stuff, but way better fresh.
