Angel of Darkness is a barrel-aged American sour. This ale is blended with 1.5 pounds per gallon of boysenberries, blackberries, raspberries and cherries and aged in Oloroso sherry casks. After 14 months of aging in these flavor-intense barrels, the beer is blended onto another 1.5 pound per gallon of these dark fruits in stainless steel tanks for 2 months. A total of 3 tons of fruit and 16 months of maturation later, we give you Angel of Darkness.

Appears black but it seems to actually be a very dark purple upon inspection. The aroma has a nice enough berry flavor. Some vanilla. Nice mix of fruit. Unfortunately, the taste isn’t as complex. Very cherry forward. Medium pucker. Some sweetness to it. Dark and cherry forward. Medium to light body. It’s pretty good but doesn’t really have much of a wow factor.

Poured from a bottle. Aroma is fairly fruit forward with lots of raspberry and other berry notes. Lighter cherry notes. Some light notes of dark roast and chocolate. Hints of oak. Light citrus and pineapple. Slightly jammy. Pours an almost black with purple and red hues with a small, somewhat thin, purplish pink head that recedes quickly to the edges where it lingers for a bit. No lacing and small legs. Flavor is somewhat sweet with moderate acidity. More cherry in the flavor with lesser berry notes. Some light roast and chocolate notes. Medium bitterness with light oak notes. Some light alcohol spice. Lingering cherry and lighter berry notes. Mouthfeel is medium full bodied with medium carbonation. Low astringency and medium low alcohol warmth. Overall, an alright beer but not an amazing one. Lots of jammy berry notes in the aroma, but a lot more cherry in the flavor. Some dark malt notes. Alcohol is well hidden.

[1/30/16] Bottle sample at the Encomium bottle share, after RateBeer Best awards ceremony at Hyatt Vineyard Creek Hotel in Santa Rosa. Thanks everyone who shared bottles! Deep purple. Big jammy berries aroma. Sourish-sweetish berries flavor. Delicious.

Bottle. Almost clear deep amber liquid with medium light tan head. Aroma of chocolate, vanilla, raw sugar and bread. Taste is very light sweet and light sour with notes of red berries, caeamel and raw materials. Medium bodied with medium carbonation. Nice.

Bottle thanks to Sam. Pours a hazy ruby copper with small of white head that diminishes to nothing. The aroma is strong berry, oak, sherry. Thin mouth, tart berry, vinous, oak, very good
