Specially brewed using an infusion of Chinese bruised ginger root and botanical extracts, Old Tom Ginger is a lively breed indeed. It has a delicious purring warmth for those colder winter nights…and a refreshing summer coolness when served over ice.

Bottle from M&S. Aroma ginger, lemony citrusy, lots of caramel, herbal. Clear amber-brown colour, quickly disappearing head. Pretty complex in flavour, surprisingly harmonic considering the number of added flavours. Warming, caramel, ginger, lemony, green tea, herbal. Refreshing, moreish, better than expected.

Bottle thanks to allmyvinyl. Appearance - deep amber to brown with an orange chink. Nose - light creamy toffee, hint of ginger. Taste - more toffee, hobnobs and ginger increases at the back of the palate. Ginger biscuits. Palate - medium bodied with a creamy texture and a fairly decent finish, if a bit too gingery. Overall - decent and the ginger is not too intrusive.

330 ml bottle into pint glass, L1306 bottle code. Pours fairly crystal clear deep reddish copper color with a 1-2 finger dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big ginger, pear, raisin, plum, caramel, toast, toffee, brown bread, herbal, light pepper, and herbal/yeast earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of ginger/pear juice, dark/bready malt, and fruity yeast ester notes; with great strength. Taste of big ginger, pear, raisin, plum, caramel, toast, toffee, brown bread, herbal, light pepper, and herbal/yeast earthiness. Slight herbal/spicy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of ginger, pear, raisin, plum, caramel, toffee, toast, brown bread, herbal, light pepper, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Damn nice robustness and complexity of ginger/pear juice, dark/bready malt, and fruity yeast ester flavors; with a great malt/spice balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light-medium carbonation and medium bodied; with a very smooth and fairly creamy/bready mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a damn nice Spiced English ale. Al around great robustness and balance of ginger/pear juice, dark/bready malt, and fruity yeast ester flavors; and very smooth to drink. A very enjoyable offering. --- Beer merged from original tick of Old Tom Ginger on 02 Oct 2014 at 23:20 - Score: 8. Original review text: Damn good.
