Specially brewed using an infusion of Chinese bruised ginger root and botanical extracts, Old Tom Ginger is a lively breed indeed. It has a delicious purring warmth for those colder winter nights…and a refreshing summer coolness when served over ice.

Bottle at home in London - picked up at the massive Tesco near Hackney Central, I think. This beer has a BBE of April 2013, so it definitely is getting long of tooth; tonight is the night, then. Pours clear amber with a creamy, khaki head - you can’t fault the appearance. Lots of spicy ginger in the aroma, along with some gloopy, ripe berries and hints of toffee. Medium to heavy sweet flavour, thick and chewy, with lots of ripe berries, creamy toffee, dense slices of holiday fruitcake. Medium to full bodied, viscous, with velvety texture and creamy carbonation. Sticky on the finish, certainly sweet, with lots more ripe berries, fruitcake, moderate ginger spice, some orange peel. Well, it is certainly an interesting beer. The sweetness prevents it from being very drinkable, but it is definitely a novelty.

Pours a hazy dark brown color, topped with a big and medium lasting tan head. Mild malty aroma with little roastiness. Moderate herbal ginger aroma. Mildly sweet start, heavy on the herbal ginger, bittery with a spicy finish. Nope, not my type.

Bottle, 0.33l. Pours clear deep amber color with medium, slightly off-white head. Very refreshing smell of ginger and caramel. Medium body with oily texture and very subtle carbonation. Taste is balanced between sweet and bitter with added spiciness. Lovely aroma, ginger, malts, caramel, nuts, berries... Nicely balanced and tasty - if you like ginger, that is. Spicy finish. Overall, pretty good brew. Original is much better, though.

Pours dark brown from the bottle with a thin foamy head. Aroma is a provocative mixture of ginger and roasted caramel malt. Quite appealing. Taste is very sweet, with a warm ginger bite that lingers in the lips. Finish is long, sweet and warming. I like ginger and have enjoyed other Old Tom brews and expected to be a fan of this one. However the ginger is a touch too strong and leaves little room for the malts and hops. Good for drinking when you have a cold.

Nagy, nagyon tartós bézs hab, sötétbarna szín. Illata intenzív, a gyömbér szinte mindent elnyom.

Bottle, 0.33l. Clear dark brown color with thick creamy tan-like head and sparkling appearance. Aroma of grass, ginger, caramel, chocolate and dark fruits. Taste starts with moderate sweet caramel, follows by roasted malt and sweet ginger, mouth feel is spicy, while finish is moderate bitter. Medium body, oily texture and average carbonation in palate. Although I’m not a ginger fan, this one is still surprisingly good...

Bottle shared, as Marks and Spencer Ginger Ale. Pours clear brown with a small tan head. Aroma of big ginger upfront with notes of pepper, overripe dark fruit, toffee and malt hiding behind. Flavour is moderate sweet and light bitter. Above light bodied with the ginger and pepper notes giving a spicy lightly hot mouthfeel and moderate prickly carbonation.

33cl bottle courtesy of Kermis. Thin ring tan head. Clear deep amber pour. Too much ginger for my taste

Bottle @ Home. Pours dark brown with a creamy tan head. Aroma of malt, caramel, herbs, spice, sweet ginger, little licorice root. Flavor is light sweet, malt, caramel, herbal, mild licorice, ginger. Medium body, light oily mouthfeel, lively carbonation. Not bad for a ginger beer. 231015
