Bottle at home. Aroma is massive oak, dark malt, roast, sweet liquorice, plenty of vanilla, touch of dark chocolate, more strong woody notes. Flavour is sweet, slightly sticky. Body is medium to full. I think they’ve gone a bit overboard with the use of wood in this beer.

Woody and sweet, licorice, bitter aftertaste. Plenty of vanilla, almost Thomas & Kenau. Maybe Jopen is crossbreeding vanilla-oak trees? Yum!

Bottle picked up from Bierboetiek De Zythotheek, Valkenburg, Netherlands. Consumed in a field at Fairports Annual Reunion Festival, Cropredy, Saturday 13th August 2016 Pours black with a large light beige sticky head. A little green hop tries to shine through the roastiness. Smooth, rich, creamy with some vanilla pushing through. Really, really nice. A7 A4 T8 P5 Ov15 3.9

Bottle from Mitra Bunnik, BB 16 Dec 2017, large sample. Dark color, short frothy head. Aroma of spicy licorice, slight alcohol, some roast, caramel fudge, bit oak, molasses, vanilla. Loads of sweet vanilla in taste, fruity candy, molasses, caramel fudge, slight roasty bitterness, bit licorice. Finishes quite dry. Initially it was more licorice, but later on caramel fudge is becoming more and more dominant. Very nice.

Spuyten Duyvil, Brooklyn bottle: pours black with small head. Aroma is caramel, roasted malt, and chocolate. Taste is somewhat sweet. Lightly metallic. Caramel and cake in the taste. Caramel aftertaste. Booze is certainly noticed. Heavy stuff. Not bad. Interesting.

Bottle. Dark brown pour. Aroma of raisin, malt, vanilla and oak. Sweet taste of oak, vanilla, caramel and cloying wood. Bit boozy and messy, previous editions were better.
