Surreal spontaneous sour ale aged in oak barrels
Spontaneously fermented in oak barrels, L'Brett d'Or's fermentation is kicked off with the help of the natural wild yeasts and bacteria residing around our coolship and native to our brewery. Since our spontaneous beers can only be brewed during the winter months, individual releases involve blending unique barrels to bring out the best of each brewing season. Characterized by funky citrus aromas, a crisp acidic bite, and a complex finish, L'Brett d'Or will continue to age with the best of them, gaining in complexity over the years.

2013 Cellar Reserve, stemmed glass opened the bottle at fridge temp and allowed it to warm up.

A - Orange-Golden hues, bright and looks delicious. not a huge amount of carbonation but itโ€™s there.

S - The mango nose is still there, more lemon than I remember. Smells like Tilquin Gueuze.

T - Taste is as dry and fruity as I remember it but I pick up some buttery notes at the finish. The start is bright, juicy and funky with a lambic like texture and tastes, grassy and dry.The finish is butter and it pretty much gets more buttery as time passes.

M - Nice mouth feel, not the explosive carbonation, more of a light sparking wine and saison mix of carbonation feel.

O - This is a nice beer but the butter really distracts. i have a few more bottles so Iโ€™ll open those up over time. Maybe this was a fluke.

OLD Review below from a 2012 bottle shared at Hill Farmstead in May: Thanks Chad. very dry, very fruity (strawberries, mango?) big explosive carbonation on the mouth feel. Overall, fun to drink but not something I could have daily.

Green Wax 2012 bottle. Pours with a hazed orange gold and a large white head that slowly fades. Aromas are of a slightly young Brett character, tons of tropical fruit (pineapple, guava), grassy hops, fanta soda and sun tan lotion. Grainy malt character, slightly catty, complex funk with strawberry and barnyard. A touch messy, but not bad. Flavors are quite sour, with tropical fruit, but a strong young Brett Cheerio character with a bit of diacetyl (so despite the dry hops, Iโ€™m going to sit on my other bottle for a while). Great acidity, nice pineapple esters, very juicy, nice grassy dry hop. Tangerine and peaches. Medium high carbonation, tannic finish, mouth puckering. Good, but needs a bit of time to clean up to become great (worth waiting 4-6months).

Bottle thanks to Dallas. Pours a cloudy orange color with a medium white eggshell head. A huge and awesome brett nose with tropical fruit. The flavor is dominated by apricots and massive dry and dusty brett, some wood, very dry. Complex. Very damn good. I really dig Crooked Stave.

Bottle. Thanks BrewThusiast! Pours hazy amber with a very small white head and some lacing on the glass. Aroma is tart - brett, funk, lemon, somewhat fruity - cantaloupe? Flavor is about the same, lightly sweet and medium tart. Medium body. Pretty good effort; not quite up to Sanctification IMO.

Bottle thanks to Perrin515. Pours cloudy gold with white head. Nose and taste of white wine barrel, oak, tart lemon, tart exotic fruit, buttered bread and light lactose tartness. Medium body. Finishes tart lemon with hints of lactose - almost like a tart lemon milk or custard.

Tap at the barrel cellar - it was hard to pin down how I felt about this one, even after a full glass - at first, I loved it - the nose was dominated by the NB love barrels and some lovely funky peach skin notes, as well as vanilla and oaky tannins - the flavor also reminded me very much of the NB love that was aged in the same whiskey barrels - equal parts sweet and funky - however, as the beer warmed, the more a very sharp note of acetone would cut through the aroma and flavor, intruding and pushing aside the more pleasant notes in the beer - an interesting experience, but a mixed bag as far as enjoyment goes.

Tap @ new barrel room. Hazy, darkish orange appearance with a small, bubbly head and little retention. Caramel corn, light butterscotch, tangy stone fruit, vanilla aroma. Strange aroma but i kind of liked it. Coconut, mild woody, vanilla, apricot, yeast, a touch funky flavor with low carbonation. Unfortunately, this tasted a bit off, but it was interesting in its own right. (3.4)

Bottle @ home with Jetson. Pours a hazy/slightly milk yellow orange appearance with a small white head. Incredibly potent bretty, huge pineapple, tangy tropical fruity aroma. Quite sour, big pineapple bretty, light oak woody, huge vanilla, tart flavor. There is a bit of caramel corn and butter, but itโ€™s not intolerable.(3.5)

Fresh-hopped bottle @ home with Jetson. Jesus Christ, the aroma is full of weedy dandelions, sour pineapple juice, and hay stacks. very juicy, pineapple bomb, quite tart flavor with a ton of herbal elements. Wow, thatโ€™s kinda cool. (3.6)
