Imperial Russian Stout is an old and interesting beer It was first brewed in the UK by English brew masters to be exported for the Russian Imperial court.
The legends say that the well traveled Peter the Great may have been the first to insist on the import of British beers to Czarist Russia The Stout beer style was also favored by the Russian Imperial Court of the era and, legend has it, was the preferred beer of that immutable rogue, Rasputin.
The strong, dark and complex character of the brews fit perfectly with the excessive demands of the contemporary nobility and court.
Zăganu Imperial Russian Stout is a 10.5% ABV stout, a dark and
bitter beer with 10.5% ABV, with intense and complex aromas of
dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee and a hint of caramel nutty flavour.
It is brewed with 6 different special malts, 2 types of hops and
fermented for a minimum period of 45 days.
Alcohol 10.5%

Bottle 330ml. @ home. 🏡❄☃️
[ As Zăganu Imperial Russian Stout ].
ABV: 10.0%. Clear dark dark brown colour with a large, frothy, good lacing, mostly lasting, beige head. Aroma is moderate malty, roasted, dark malt, sweet malt, vegi coffee, brown sugar, light meat - smoked meat - smoke. Flavor is moderate sweet and bitter with a average to long duration, sweet malt, dark malt, shoe polish, roasted, wood, sweet malt, - brown sugar, floral, vegi coffee, meat - smoke, to me a bit odd ! Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft, finish feel is warming. [20210208]

Tasting glass (2,05€) @ Fabrica De Bere Bună / Zăganu Bar (visited 15.4.) in Bucharest in Romania. F: big, tanned, long lasting. C: dark with dark brown tones against the light. A: dark malts, chocolate, cocoa, dried dark fruits, toffee, bit vinous. T: rich dark malty base, sweet toffee, caramel, vinous, mellow fruity, too much on the sweet side and for IBU +100 so I don’t believe this number yet not bad, full body and medium carbonation, enjoyed.

Has a candy thing going on in the aroma. Nicely balanced and all around really good, I would like a bit more roast complexity and “bigness” from a 10% beer. romanian craft beer bucharest

Clear deep ruby, light beige head. Starts bad - smelly malts, rough roast, harsh alcohol, some veggies. After some aeration it gets decent - sack malts and dusty cereals, pretty simple burnt sugars and notes of harsh alcohol. More like a generic Brună. The taste is close - actual malts and lots of dark sugars, spicy alcohol and quite a bit of woody chlorophyll bitterness. Not what one would expect from a modern impy - it's all plain sugars, spicy alcohol. The lack of roasty notes make it feel more like a more simplistic kind of a Quad/Baltic Porter hybrid. If you can take that - it's actually pretty decent. If all you expect is a liquid desert - yeap, you'd be bitterly disappointed.
