30 April 2018, at M-Café, Leuven. Shared with Anke.
Pours hazy black with a thick, moussy, beige head; little lacing. The aroma contains milk chocolate, fondant, cream, chocolate cake, cherry cake, praliné, red & black berries, candied dark fruits. It tastes light to medium berry-like sour and light to medium malty & chocolatey sweet with a 'powdery' effect; a hint of candied cherries (for cava) adds to the sweetness; very light roasted bitterness in the back. Bit tart & toasty (fondant) finish. Medium body, slick/syrupy texture, fizzy carbonation. Deftly executed hybrid.

Sample from bottle at Wijnhuis Ede bierproeverij april 13, 2018. Color: Very dark ruby, light brown head. Taste: Dark roasted malt, notes of chocolate. Medium bitter, moderate sweet. Clear tart notes of black current, moderate sour. A pretty good trial to combine porter with red fruit. Very lightly vinuous notes. Long lasting fruity bittery finish.

Flying Dutchman’s blackcurrant porter, draught at Ganzerik in Ghent. Tightly papery lacing, very regularly shaped, thick and densely creamy, tan coloured, stable head over a black beer with cherry red hazy edges. Aroma of Mon Chéri chocolates, actual milk chocolate bars and Belgian chocolates, clear cassis indeed, elderberry, cola, coffee cream, Sachertorte, Kirsch, toffee, candied fig, iron, blackberry jam, plum. Sweet onset, blue plum and apple notes drenched in a strong blackcurrant juice (cassis) flavour adding some refreshing tartness, very vivid also due to quite strong carbonation; creamy and pleasantly ‘powdery’ mouthfeel. Thoroughly toffeeish and (milk) chocolatey malt sweetness, blackcurrant tartness balancing out the sweetness a bit – though a statement can be made for both flavours to clash and not really blend well with each other. Bitterness remains very soft and low, apart from a vague tea-ish hop accent in the finish. The fruit sourness does add some dryness here and whether you like the combination with a notably sweet chocolatey profile or not, comes down to personal taste I suppose ; I genuinely enjoyed this, perhaps even more so than most other Flying Dutchman creations, with its almost liquid ‘praline’-like profile. Interesting and enjoyable fruit porter, a concept which usually doesn’t entirely work for me.

Bottle at Beer Hunters. Dark brown colour, small brownish head. Aroma has toastyness, black currant and hints of dark chocolate. Medium-bodied. Front has black currant with its tartness, then toasted malts and chocolate. Nice use of black currant here. Liked it.
