23 July 2018. L'Ermitage Tap Takeover at Dok Brewing, Ghent. Cheers to Anke!
Pours clear dark golden with a lasting, foamy, off-white head; lots of lacing. Fresh aroma of mango, lime juice, orange (peel), pine, hashish even, bready malt, hay & freshly cut grass. It tastes medium hoppy bitter, piney & grassy, bit yeasty and light fruity sweet, some orange & 'bitter' mango & grapefruit. Dry, piney, almost resinous hoppy finish, lingering bread & yeast. Medium body, slick texture, lively carbonation. Deftly executed, modern quencher - likeable!

At last, a bit later than originally announced due to some starting problems apparently, this brand new and majestic brewpub in Ghent presents its first own beer, bravely making its appearance amidst the fine brews from many other breweries they offer – against the background of a seemingly important football game. There was an option to drink this beer with yoghurt ice added, which I obviously declined. Intended simply as a ‘hoppy blonde’, this first-born bears a snow white, rather large-bubbled, bit irregularly shaped, medium thick head, slowly dissipating in the middle but otherwise stable, over a hazy, warm peach-hued ‘yolk’ golden blonde robe. Aroma of grapefruit peel and some pink grapefruit juice, bread crust, white peppercorns, freshly cut grass, dried mango, mandarin, green banana, dried wormwood leaves, minerals, old lemon zest, olive oil. Very clean onset, some subdued sweetishness like unripe green banana and green pear, with a sourish edge accentuated by lively, very minerally carbonation; smooth, bit oily, very ‘easygoing’ mouthfeel. Straightforward cereally (even bit grainy), lightly white bread crumb-like maltiness supporting a grapefruity, subtly piney, spicy, pleasantly but not too harshly bittering, tad rooty hop bitterness, stretching for medium length over the finish. Young and supple quencher, surprisingly clean (bit too clean, perhaps?) but very easy to drink, I could easily have drunk this all night; style-wise, even if the creators are a bit hesitant to call it that way, this fits neatly in the APA category (which is what the sign above the taps mentioned as well – so this is clearly by intention). Congrats to Janos, Dimitri and the rest of the Dok crew: this is a very modern, up to date, technically very well-executed, Anglo-Saxon style quencher, even if to me personally (and not just me) it could have benefited from a tad more aromatic 'fruity hop' sweetness and malt sweetness. Nice start for sure, and from what I heard, this ambitious project is planning to churn out new beers practically every week, so brace yourselves, Ghent beer geeks!
