Hornbeer Hophorn

Hophorn

Hornbeer in Kirke Hyllinge, Region Zealand, Denmark 🇩🇰

With this Hophorn, we try to combine the best from more beerstyles. hop bitterness and aroma from the IPA’s,
the fillness from the malty types and notes from roasted barley like you know it from porters and stouts. The color is like walnut brown – deep and dark.

The bitterness is 135 IBU’s, and we have dry hopped with a lot of hops – 4 different types. The sweetness is from 5 different malts, taste of caramel from crystal malt and notes from the chocolate malt. Hophorn is very tasteful and we recommend tulipglass – it’s the way the beer should be served with it’s beige foam. Hophorn is perfect to cheese. The creamy cheeses, the oldest blue cheeses and the goatcheese. Try it to spicy food, but don’t forget to drink water. Then it all tastes much better. The temperature should be around 12-14 degrees. The beer is unfiltered so there might be some sediment in the bottle.

500ml Bottle (Thanks Svesse) - Dark brown with a foamy and lively head. Liquorice, toffee, coffee, chocolate, roasted malt and soapy hops in the aroma. The taste is fairly complex with some strong hoppy notes featuring along with notes of aniseed (black jack sweets), liquorice toffos, coffee and roasted malt. Very tasty and the best black IPA I’ve tried thus far.

Draught @ Pikkulintu, Helsinki

Pours dark orange with a medium head. Aroma has hints of roast, chocolate, coffee and hops. Taste starts out quite sweet and fruity but finish is very roasty and hoppy. Great beer, a bit different than your typical black IPA.

50 cl bottle from Systembolaget. Black color with medium off-white head. Smells of hops, grapefruit, citrus, pine, coffee and some roasted malt. Taste is dry with medium bitterness. Feels more balanced than most black IPAs. Medium bodied with nice carbonation. Very well made and more drinkable than other example in the same style.

(Draught at Pikkulintu) The beer poured dark brown and almost clear. Its head was dense, medium sized, long lasting and light brown. Aroma had malts, chocolate and hops. Palate was medium bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were malts, hops, chocolate, mildly roastedness and medium bitterness. Aftertaste roasty and bitter. As this was supposed to be an IPA the roasty flavour and scent was not so fitting. Otherwise a good brew.

Deep ruby color, small beige head. Very berryish (strawberry) aroma. Medium to full-bodied. Flavor is also very berryish: strawberry, licorice, caramel. Hoppy, roasted aftertaste.

50 cl bottle, thanks to ekstedt!BB 05 01 2014, sampled on April 1, 2011Very long estimated BB date for an IPA?Black color, big tan to light brown head. Smells like a fresh opened cascade hops bag, citrus, pine needles, green scent. Just lovely. Sweet, malty, caramel, almost cloying sweet taste. Sweet and bitter aftertaste. Medium to smooth mouthfeel, medium bitterness.Big differance between scent and taste, still nice though.

Bottle. Dark brown with a large, tan head. Aroma of licorice, roasted malt, resin and fruit. The same in the taste, also some chocolate and grass. Drinkable but not the best beer out there.

10 cl. sample from bottle at DØE tasting - 10 "best" new danish beers 2010. This beer was my first place. Very dark - tan colour. Beige head. A complex brew: The aroma is hoppy and with citrus notes like a IPA, but the colour is dark, and there is also notes of chocolate. Same goes with the taste: Both chocolate, sweets malts and hops. A very good beer - this was my winner at this tasting!
