Dark and elegant, but above all, palatable and pleasantly malty – this is how Ottakringer Dunkles presents itself. Four carefully selected special malts give the darkest of our beers its aromatic character. Mainly chocolate, but also a hint of cocoa and coffee are combined to create a mellow yet intense taste experience. The dark malts give the beer a certain sweetness which makes additional sweetening unnecessary. This variety of aromas would even make wine drinkers jealous! Our draught dark beer is unfiltered like a dark Zwickl.

Bottle in Vienna. The usual medium brown dunkel color. Decent head. Not a very strong aroma, would like a little more actually. Can’t really sense any darkish or roasted malts. Clear, refreshing taste, medium body, rather light for the type, I think. Malt is not roasted all that much; a bit, but I would prefer a little more. It has a good malt taste, though, and a decent balance. Just slightly sweet, which I like, but there is very little of the usual caramel flavor. I don’t mind that either, but without strong roasted flavor it tastes a bit too little like a dunkel. A decent hop aftertaste, though basically staying within the limits of the style. All in all I like it, but it is not altogether interesting or original. A good, easy to drink light-bodied dunkel.

01/08 A 0.5 l bottle from Interspar Udine. It poured dark red to brown body with small brownish head. Nice dark malty aroma, some caramel, dark fruits and even chocolate. Flavor was nice as well, caramelly, slightly sugary and fruity. Unfortunately, watery, very thin bodied, with short sweetish and watery finish. Nice beer, if only had somewhat more body!

Draught, 4.2% at the brewpub. Faintly sour aroma. Dark brown colour, seems clear. Stable tan head. The flavour is mildly roasted, and then rather thin. Seems OK clean. Roasted caramelly aftertaste.
