Couldn’t imagine I would ever ever ever have an Asahi as a celebration beer but somehow time and place determine a lot. It’s super competitive to get into public daycare in Japan and my six month old daughter just got into our second choice. We decided to take a boat to Asakusa (Asahi headquarters area) and the boat only served special Asahi beers (no Super Dry). It was a warm February afternoon and we got seat at the back of the boat where it was open. A beer was a must. Would have been better if I brought something from my house but you deal with the hand you are dealt so I had this beer. Nice malt character with lots of caramel, bread and cherry notes. Not a masterpiece by any stretch but better than I hoped and I am a happy man.

On tap at Asahi taproom, Asakusa. Red color, clear, big white head. Aroma of light roasted malts, caramel and faint herbal. Light body, average carbonation, decent amber lager.

On tap in the backstreets of Gion Matsuri. 300 yen for a small 500 yen for a large. I was told it was 6-7% ABV but I have no idea if that is accurate. A clear amber pour with a thick creamy beige head. The aroma is sweet grainy light caramel. Light bodied but somewhat watery. The taste is biscuit, light bready caramel goodness. Well balanced. Pretty good.

Bottle at Tokyo Dome Hotel. Clear amber-brown colour with a bit of head. Rather weak aroma of caramel, fruit, malt. No flavour really jumps out but there is a weak mix of caramel, dried fruit.

Tap at the Asahi beer hall in Kyoto. Very much more a vienna or amber lager than a dunkel, but that’s what they call it. Pretty amber-red color with a very fine head. Aroma of caramel and fruit, though not very fragrant. Soft flavors of caramel, plums, cherry, plus a bit roasty in the finish. A bit of adjunct noticeable. Decent stuff for a macro.
