Bottle from Izuya. Golden brown colour with rapidly fading head. Aroma is fruity and boozy. Apricot, bubblegum, belgian yeastiness, sweet boozy maltiness. Taste is similar. Quite full on, sweet and boozy, apples, and other stewed fruits. Initially floral too, and the finish is a little bit prickly. Quite a lot going on. Will definitely look out for this again. --- Beer merged from original tick of Umenishiki Aromatic Ale on 09 Sep 2019 at 16:05 - Score: Appearance - 6 | Aroma - 9 | Flavor - 9 | Texture - 6 | Overall - 8. On tap at Bungalow, a cloudy honey brown pour with a foamy off-white head. The aroma is yeasty, with some Belgian notes. Nice full body but the flavor is ultra fruity but not in a good way, tastes like it fermented high grape juice kind of fruitiness - juice box like, then some spicy Belgian influenced notes. You don’t feel that 8.5% at all which is nice. As it warms up that estery quality starts to turn into acetone/fusel chemical flavors not fully but it is leaning that way. Not good not terrible but... judging from the ratings it looks like the latest batch was BAD I really don’t get why Japanese craft brewers release beers that obviously have issues with them... I wish I’d had a 4+ version of this beer...

Draft to a plastic cup @ Nippon Craft Beer Festival 2014. Pours hazy brown like an Estonian home-brew. Aroma is a bit funny, has characteristics of a home-brew, also smells like a sweet candy. Taste.. is like a home-brew - which is not bad per se but does not also communicate too much sophistication. Some sweet candies diluted in this brew, not sure if I like them. It has some unpleasant bitter background base - as if this beer is made from a beer condensate or something. Aroma has not been achieved with hops here - or something has gone amiss. Pretty terrible actually, needed to force myself to finish this small cupful.

Bottle. Aromas of caramel, biscuits, earth, strawberry, chocolate. Cloudy orange-amber color, medium head going right to lace. Sweet flavor of molasses, honey, caramel, marachino cherry, strawberry. Alcohol to balance, falls a bit short. Quite sweet, almost cloying but not. Thick, rich palate without being syrupy. Very well done powerful, sweet strong ale. Not Belgian at all, and not oxidized line an English strong ale either. Interesting and original. Malt complexity is almost bock-like, but fruity like an ale.
