Pours black with a thin tan head. Aroma of roasted malt. Taste is light and malty, nutty aftertaste. Palate has earthy nut notes on the back of the tongue. Interesting.

From old tasting notes. Translucent brown color. Rocky tan head. Fragrant roasted malt nose. Tangy toasted malt flavor with lactic undertones. Assertive hop finish. Burnt malt aftertaste.

She pours a jet black color and leaves the same colored body with a slight brown around the edges. The head dissipates within seconds.
The smell has a slightly creamy sweet blend of coffee and has some toasted bread character to it.
The taste is nutty and chocolate sweetness with a tinge of bitter coffee at the end.
On the palate, she sits about a light to medium, slightly sessionable with a tangy aftertaste and finish.
Overall, it is a decent brew that I might have again.

Yet another 12 oz. bottle purchased at Oliver’s Beverage Center. English pint shows a dark brown color with thin off white head that died quickly. Nose is malty, nutty with hints of fruit. Taste is weak and all over the place. Chocolate, caramel with toffee tone. The off putting thing is a strange wheat sourness that really should be here. The body is toasted grain with a watery, super thin texture. Odd yeast tones. This MAYBE a way to introduce a stout to somebody who has never had one but… I sure the hell wouldn’t. I would offer a good home brew before this. This is my 12th offering from Matt Brewing, doesn’t make me want any more beer from this brewery.

Bottle from a mixed box at the BevMo in Roseville, CA. Pours ruddy dark brown with a creamy beige head. Aroma is dark toasted malt with some cooked dark fruit undertone. Med body. Flavor is roast malt with some medium dark fruit. It has that burnt toast flavor in the aftertaste. It’s definitely a bitter drink. Malt sweet keeps popping up, but something (hop?) keeps bittering things up. Interesting drink.

9/6/2009 Pours a solid dark brown with deep ruby highlights and a huge creamy tan head that sticks around forever. Smells of roasted malts, cotton candy, some dark fruit, aromatic malts, a little toffee. Theres a strange bitterness in the smell that seems out of place. Taste is malty at first. Starts off like cold coffee and dark fruit then that harsh bitterness that was in the smell comes through. A finishes with a lingering chocolate taste that would have been great the whole way through. Creamy smooth mouthfeel, medium to thick in the body, medium carbonation. This one was only okay. I liked it at first, but as it warmed I liked it less and less. The astringent bitterness ruined this one for me.

Bottle. Weak roasted aroma. Almost black colour, red shine. Small stable creamy tan head. Nice, mildly roasted flavour. Hint of sweetness. Sweet liquorice. Weak fruit finish. Well-balanced.
