I love Saranac even if their beers tend to be a little simple. Dark black pour. Nose and tastes of light mocha. Some chocolate malts. Rated 11/5/01

Bottle. Pitch black, tall brown head. Burnt malt, coffee and chocolate aroma. Very well roasted. Very burnt flavor as well, and lots of coffee. Just a touch of sweetness balances the bitter and roasted side well. Rather creamy as well. Burnt, coffee finish that lasts a long time. Fairly well carbonated for a stout, maybe a bit too much. Good stuff.

12 oz bottle..2006 release..dark dark brown with a tan head..thin yet lasting...nice little lacing..rich mocha and coffee aroma...hints of chocolate...sooo yummy...love the coffee taste...i could drink this in the morning...texture is silky as well...57 to 58!!

12 oz brown bottle. Pours black nearly opaque in my steeler stein, really nice. Less thick than many sweet stouts. A little hint of sweetness in the aroma. Has a nice creamy looking head that I want to put my fingers into. Taste commnces with cofee but fades a little after the swish. Is this a cream stout? Could be classified as one. Reminds me of Lancaster milk stout or Sammy Adams double cream stout. A little malty like La Rossa. Lingering finish of strong black cofee. Good effort by saranac. Much better than their black & tan which is also classified as a straight stout.

its the 12 beers of the Christmas. Poured into small tulip glass. Pours with a small light brown head, that quickly fades to lacing. Aroma is very present - lots of sweet molasses and lactose aroma. Taste is less impressive, but that is expected. It the Saranac watery empty aroma with only hints of what is in the aroma. Low bitterness, but this is very sweet, almost makes me think it should be a sweet stout.

Deep reddish black, clear, with a nice moka head. The nose is of butterscotch and strawberries, with light vanilla chocolate. The mouth is powdery cocoa, with malt balls, burnt toast, and nice bitterness lingering. Medium bodied. Rather on the sweet but pleasant.

This one came in my holiday sampler. The name and description had me fairly enthused to try this one. Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a black color with a medium sized dark brown head. The aroma was sharp dry bakers chocolate - and rather yummy at that. The flavor was filled with a bakers chocolate element and was rich, malty and smooth. I found the texture to be nicely thick. I would definitely get this one on its own if it were available.

Beautiful blackness, with a large, soft creamy head. Really pours nice: frothy & nice lacing. Similar in aroma to their Caramel Porter, with the sweet malts in the nose, but adds a hit of coffee as well. Flavorful taste, no doubt. Stars out with a sweet caramel flavor, followed by a chocolatey thing, and finishes as bitter as a cold cup of leftover coffee. Very pleasant. Nice to see Saranac making some decent brews... may be a nice and inexpensive way to get macro-drinking-friends switched to better beers.

Dark brown coloured body, not opaque at all, with crimson highlights when held up to a light. Aroma of light cardboard, malt, subtle low quality chocolate (less than 30% cacao), mushrooms and must-not too pleasant. Light-bodied; Super fake caster sugar taste with some mild malt, cardboard, caramel and a light coffee twang. Aftertaste is just as unpleasant-metal, blood, light malt and some bitter malt is present. Overall, another horrible Sary beer...but this was really expected. Avoid this one, because it really isn’t any good. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle pulled from the holiday sampler pack purchased at Total Wine in McLean, Virginia on 03-January-2005.

Nice, but definitely more of a porter than a stout. Dark garnet color, purplish tinge, not opaque. Rich aroma is chock full of a near plummy, lightly roasted chocolatey malt profile. Flavor is similar, somewhat ashy in the light roast finish, tinge of dark fruitiness with a touch of mocha. The body is definitely light for a stout, as I said, but is still nicely rounded and smooth, this is a nice beer.
