Black color with a creamy white head. Sweet chocolate and toffee aroma with hints of roasted malts. Sweet caramel and toffee flavors with some light astringency. Thanks to CaptainCougar for sending this to Richmond.

Dark brown colour. The aroma is complex but indistinct. Whole grain bread leads the way in the nose but I’m struggling to pick out much of anything else. Molasses notes are at the fore of a sweet, nutty body that features leathery accents and sugar-laden gas station coffee. Roast and hop bitterness are minimal, making this more of a porter (a style in which molasses is more at home anyway).

Bottle Pours a clear very dark but not quite opaque black with a moderate light tan head and spotty lacing. Lots of sweet dark roasted aroma with some coffee and chocolate notes. Flavor is a roasted slightly bitter smokiness, easy on the hops and some slightly sour porter like flavors. Coffee here as well but not too strong. Fairly thin feel and moderate carbonation. Prety nice.

I expected to really notice a heavy sweetness from the molasses, but I should have realized it would ferment out and leave a pretty dry beer, as this was. Roast is the featured theme here, lots of dry, burnt, ashy charcoal of barley. A little touch of caramel once you focus. Hops not prominent, just balancing. Bittersweet chocolate. A fun beer when you want something a bit out of the ordinary. Attractive near opaque showing some red at the edges, nice head and lacing, as with most of their beers.

Black with a large tan head. Carmel and coffee aromas. Flavor is surprisingly light with coffee and chocolate. Body is thin, and the beer is somewhat bitter. In an older bottle all of the same is there, but now there is some sweetness and fermenting fruit as well Also carmel, giving it a bock flavor while cold. Good; score raised.

On tap at BridgePort, sampled 4 August 2004. Deep charcoal brown body, thin/medium cream (light tan) head. Sweet milk chocolate aroma with hints of molasses and licorice. Roasted malt flavor, sweet (almost lactic) mocha and dry chocolate, molasses. Oily, thin/medium body with a slightly astringent feel.
