Bottle bought from the prefectural shop in Shinbashi. Dark brown colour with small golden head. Aroma is very interesting. Bit of roast as expected, some smoke, something savoury there, and a fruity boozy element. I can see the comparison that some people made with port. Ovaltine too. Pretty good! Taste is similarly interesting. Very smooth and easy to drink. That savoury element is there again, maybe a light soy sauce, can taste the malt, slight creamy sweetness. Finish is dark fruits then fading into a sweet malty finish. Really different from the usual imperial stouts we get here. Will definitely look out for this again.

Bottle split at RB Best Hotel Lobby Share, post festival, 31/01/16. Light black wuth a decent tan cap. Nose is roast malts, light charr, chocolate, spice. Taste comprises dark fruit rinds, chocolate, black peppery spice, roast malts, faint coffee, dark toffee. Full bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Sippable Impy ... ticks the style boxes but a touch basic.

Bottle shared during RBWG. Pours clear, deep brown with a creamy tan head. The nose has toasted malts, light earth, chocolate. Medium sweet flavor with aged chocolate, some damp earth, hints of dark fruits, earthy bitterness. Medium bodied with average carbonation. Warming finish, more toast, cocoa, dried berries. So so.

2015 bottle from Tanakaya. Pours a deep brown to black with a half-finger tan head that dissipates but lingers for a while. Dark fruit aromas early on and as it warms, bourbon and oak (weird in a non-barrel aged beer, but it’s there), chocolate, ovaltine and roasted coffee all come out. The chocolate really stands out as well as the coffee as it warms. Not sweet at all and really well-balanced. Nice chocolate finish with some roasted coffee and light bitterness that lingers. Very solid. --- Beer merged from original tick of Imperial Stout on 01 Dec 2015 at 08:40 - Score: 8

330ml bottle poured into a Bruery tulip. 2014 vintage bought in December 2014 at Yamaoka in Kyoto, thanks to KansaiBeerLvrs for showing me around! Black with some sediment floaters, nice two fingers or so of tan head. Aromas of roasted coffee, dark chocolate, some musty oak. Tastes of dark chocolate, roasted coffee, hint of soy sauce. Full body with a dry and slightly warm finish. Thick creamy mouthfeel. Pretty well masked alcohol for 9% ABV.
