Our head brewer at our Windsor brewery homebrewed a batch of chocolate stout for himself after trying the style at a beer dinner and loving it. After several Harpooners tried Scott’s batch, we knew that we needed to add this beer to our lineup. It was originally introduced as a limited edition extra in our winter mix pack back in 2008, but it was soon apparent that our drinkers wanted more of this beer (a beer made with chocolate…not too hard to understand!), so we brought it back in 6-packs in 2010.
Description
A chocolate stout is a beer with a noticeable dark chocolate flavor. This flavor is created from the use of darker, more aromatic malt that has been roasted or kilned until it acquires a chocolate color. Harpoon Chocolate Stout is brewed with an abundance of chocolate malt and a touch of chocolate.

Bottled. Pours dark, somewhat of a thinner mouthfeel, a pretty easy drinking chocolate malty stout.

Bottle 355ml (from Puerto Rico)
Dark, almost opaque color, small steady beige head. Aroma has strong chocolate and mud cake. Medium-bodied. Dark chocolaty flavor too, mudcake, toasted maltyness. I am not a big fan of these "chocolate beers which taste only chocolate" but well-brewed. Sweet stout with lots of sweetness and low bitterness.

A dark brown stout with a thin mocha head. In aroma, very sweet milk chocolate with vanilla, Nestlé quick, nice if a bit cloying. In mouth, dry powdery chocolate malt with light mineral notes, grassy hops, OK. On tap at Best Western Plus Waterbury.

12 oz. bottle. Thanks, Joe! Pours black, with a big, bubbly, tan head that fizzles quickly, leaving no lacing. The aroma is immediate dark chocolate, vanilla, and a lot of earthiness. Very sweet, with just a little bitterness through the finish. Light to medium body, syrupy and thin. Overall, this is a relatively well-made beer, but lacks any sort of depth. Drinkable, but, meh...

Tap at Stags Head. Deep brown pour with creamy head. Nose of fudge. Tastes super chocolaty, with some heavy cream, earth, vanilla, coffee, and more chocolate. Just rich dessert beer. Just a touch to cloying for me

$1.80 bottle from Wine Warehouse, Charlottesville. Pours black with a frothy soft brown head. Smells of sweet chocolates, roasted malts, and chocolate milk. Tastes of bittersweet chocolate. Maybe a tootsie roll? Some tang to the finish.
