Pure Milwaukee Genius Series 4: Black IPA - We took all the stuff people love about IPA’s and gave this beer plenty of crystal and dark roasted malts. This dark coffee-colored beer pours a rocky, light tan head that leaves plenty of lacing on the glass. the hoppy pine and floral aromas ready your palate for an immediate bitterness. Instead, the sweet, caramely crystal malts blitz through, followed immediately by a sharp piney flavor from the Zeus and Cascade hops. The smooth body leaves a long lasting hoppy finish.

22 oz bottle purchased at TC Craft Beer in New Hope, Minnesota. Bottle during is on the label, but not notched. Pour is hazed brown ruby with a two inch tan head that builds up nicely on the pour. Aroma is fresh clean pine needles, along with fruit sweetness and a whisper of roast malt. Taste is the fresh clean pine up front, moving to a a pineapple citrus and then the hops give way to roast and chocolate malt, finishing with a dry char mineral. I liked the balance between malt and hops quite a bit in this beer. As it warms, some interesting floral notes come out. Palate is light bodied, nice active carbonation and the clean dry finish. Drinkable beer. Certainly not a hop bomb, but a nicely balanced hoppy black ale.

Dark brown coloured body with 95% opacity and a nice frothy light brown head - very nice looking for sure. Aroma of fresh herbal and floral hops with a grapefruit and piney kick and a good amount of malt and a nice resiny finish. Medium-bodied; Biting roasty malt flavour with a lot of earth and caramel up front then showing some good nice hop flavours of flowers and resin that don’t seem as strong as the nose indicates. Aftertaste has a good balance of roasty malt and fresh hops with the former dominating. Overall, a nice Black IPA with the hops playing second fiddle - so a good one to sample if you prefer tasting the roasty malt but also like fresh hops. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Merchant’s in Dearborn, Michigan on 28-April-2011 sampled at home in Upstate New York (New Paltz) on 07-May-2011.

Bomber from Malt & Vine. Pours really dark brown with a 3 finger creamy/foamy light tan head. Big pine aroma. Med+ body. There’s pine and perfumey/floral with the flavor - so much that I’m almost losing the darkish malt. I’d say this is the hoppiest, not necessarily the bitterest, "black IPA" I can recall. As the foam goes down, the floral hits the nose. It is extremely hoppy in a sort of Imperial English way. Not a NW way. Very good experience here. Brilliant.
