Barrel & Bean starts its life as our Tripel—a Belgian-style golden ale. We age that beer in bourbon barrels for just shy of two months, before blending it with cold-brewed coffee from Speckled Ax, a Maine coffee roaster. The sun-dried Ethiopian beans in the coffee are known for their stone fruit and dark berry flavors. The finished beer features rich notes of caramel, bourbon, and coffee.

On tap at Blind Tiger, pours a hazy copper with a small white head. Aroma brings out loads of coffee upfront, followed by whiskey and light candied sugar. Flavour is complex as hell in a way you'd never expect from such a description, with Belgian yeast, coffee beans, and whiskey. Boozy and burning, but not in a detracting way. Fantastic stuff.

Pours clear gold into a snifter. Bright white head with good retention recedes leaving spot lacing. Vanilla, chocolate and espresso aromas. Thin with sweet mocha and vanilla upfront warming to espresso in the lasting, sweet vanilla and bourbon finish. I wanted to like this one more...

Draft at the brewery, 7/26/16. Golden-orange. Big coffee and booze aroma. Caramel and bournon. Similar flavor. Full bodied and fairly hot. Nice sipper. You can taste the ABV on this one for sure.

Tap at Harry’s Hofbrau in San Jose. Coffee grinds dominate aroma. Hazy golden-orange with moderate white head that lingers as a creamy ring. Taste is astringent coffee and baker’s chocolate. Thinish mouthfeel.

On tap at The Reservoir, Waterbury, VT, this was poured into a tulip.
The appearance was a hazy burnt orange color with a bar pour’s kind of slim little head, quickly dissipates and leaves barely any lacing.
The smell started off with boozy bourbon sweetness running into the normal qualities of a Tripel or in this case Curieux and then as it warms, the coffee comes out nice and sweet. The differences of the sweet coffee (cold pressing) to the tripel qualities of iced apples and sweet breadiness really come together well and make it a really nice aroma.
The taste was moderately sweet through the Curieux qualities. Bourbon sits back a bit more in the flavor and gives off a slight sweet blend in the aftertaste. Semi-sticky finish.
On the palate, this one sat about a medium on the body with a nice semi-smooth feel to it. I think that cold pressed coffee was a great idea as it really felt great all around.
Overall, well, there ya go, Allagash taking an already stellar beer to the next level. Of course, I’d have this again.

Keg at Top Hops - NYC. Pours mostly clear gold with a frothy, white topping. The nose holds some fresh coffee, pale malts, bread. Medium sweet flavor with notes of toffee, some citrus, coffee. Full bodied with fine to average carbonation. Warming finish with subtle cocoa, coffee beans, orange. Good one.
