Barrel & Bean starts its life as our Tripel—a Belgian-style golden ale. We age that beer in bourbon barrels for just shy of two months, before blending it with cold-brewed coffee from Speckled Ax, a Maine coffee roaster. The sun-dried Ethiopian beans in the coffee are known for their stone fruit and dark berry flavors. The finished beer features rich notes of caramel, bourbon, and coffee.

Draught @ Alisson's, Kennebunkport. Cloudy golden amber with very small white frothy head, coffee beans aroma, low carbonation, sweetish bourbon infused taste with alcohol undertones, smooth body long finish. The bourbon has brought some sweetness into the brew but the flavor and alcohol effect are not too obvious.

Bottle thanks to Ed. Pours a cloudy orange gold with small white head that lasts. The aroma is strong roast coffee, pure sugar, yeast, spice. Medium body, yeast, spice, cocoa, roast, boozy finish, very good.

Corked bottle courtesy of Brian
Cloudy light amber color. The cold brew produces a mild earthy aroma, ancho chilies, vanilla (from the bourbon). The body is lean, moderately sweet, with high alcohol perception; delicate malt base, a bit earthy and grassy; no Tripel character, no bourbon evidence (besides the booze); some vegetable bitterness in the final.
Ungraceful brew, uncoordinated, and rather unpleasant.

Draft. Golden beer with a whitish head. Bourbon aroma. Bourbon and coffee flavor with fruitiness. Bourbon and fruitiness lingers with light coffee.

Coffee, oak, slightly tart apple core nose. Cloudy amber, thick head, nice lace. Bourbon, coffee, apple core. Full body, easy carbonation. The coffee addition kind of smooths out the rough edges of the bourbon.

750ml bottle at Brian’s office. Bottled on 2016-05-19. Pours a hazy golden with a white head. Aroma is green pepper, coffee, some spices. Taste is quite smooth, similar to aroma, some bourbon notes. Just an ok.

Hazy, tan, no head. This has a lot of coffee on the nose, touch of that tripel accent though it is definitely subordinated to the coffee. On the palate, the coffee again is really quite strong. The tripel lends some nice mellow phenols and a thick pale malt character. The barrel is nowhere to be found. The coffee almost seems like a cover up - the beer isn’t bad at all but the coffee is really incongruous to me.
