The usually peaceful St. Vrain River snakes out of the Rocky Mountains, winding mischievously towards our brewery. Named after Ceran St. Vrain, an 1800’s trapper and trader in the valley, St. Vrain is our version of a classic Belgian Tripel. Light in color and lightly hopped using Celeia hops, a touch of malt sweetness contrasts the warm spiciness hidden within. What at first appears benevolent can manifest into a mighty serpent in waiting.

Schönes cremiges Triple in belgischer Tradition. Blind hätte ich direkt getippt, dass es aus Belgien oder Holland kommt. Sehr bekömmlich, lecker.

a light yellow beer, a head is small and white. Aroma has grain, earthyness. Taste has earthyness, herbs, grain. Medium bodied. No fruitness, only earthnyess and sourness, not my type of Tripel.

Can - a little surprised I’ve never had this before - pours a lightly hazy gold with moderate lace - medium to high sweetness with a mixture of peppery phenolics and fruity esters - notes of baked apples and clove - a bit sweeter than I like, and some of the yeast character is not my favorite in the style (like the clove), but pretty darn good for a canned rendition available in the grocery store.

In my possession is a 12 oz can of St. Vrain purchased recently at a World of Beer in The Villages, FL for an almost unreasonable amount. But do I listen to reason? Making the pour into a Great Heights tulip glass, there appears a semi-transparent lemon yellow body with a top of creamy, near white foam. The carbonation, active, very active. The nose is decent, yellow fruit, grain, yeast and meadow. The taste is likewise all right with me. Peaches, apricots, slightly spicy, malt, yeast and some breadiness. I do get a small bitterness, not minded at all, to finish a slightly sweet start. A credible USA tripel.

12oz can. Mildly hazy yellow-tan body. Not much of a head at all. Aroma isn't that pleasant, an earthy barnyard touch. Strong, but not overly thick. The hops give a nice balance, and overall it has decent flavor. The mouthfeel is quite lacking compared to a Belgian, and it falls short there. Overall a decent stab at the style, not a one dimensional candi sugar bomb.

Some coriander and florals. Not a ton going on here, but nothing wrong really. Golden pour with good head and lacing. Light sweet finish. Can at Rendezvous.

Gold with a fleeting, foamy head. Candied fruit aroma. Rubbery too though. A bit of anise. Somehow it’s not really coming together although it’s by no means offensive. Taste has a mild, bready sweetness. The yeastiness is evident, as is a light tartness that rounds out the finish. Medium to full bodied—mild carbonation. A light warmth but the alcohol remains well hidden. Overall, kind of disappointing though.

Bouteille: Golden, almost clear, but some tiny floaties are visible, small white foamy layer; mild to moderate sweet fruity nose with cellary traces of yeast and an uncertain bitterness underneath; moderate sweet flavour, accompanied both by a little bitterness and a little tartness, more medium than full bodied; slightly lingering sweet-bitter fruity finish. Not bad, but a bit too monotonous...
