Together we’re brewing a riff on the flavors of the classic raspberry ice cream sundae. This beer features raspberry, cocoa and vanilla, in addition to lactose (an unfermentable sugar) that adds a richness and a sweetness, helping to blend and meld the flavors of this ultra-complex beer together. It’s been a true pleasure to work with artists at The Bruery using ingredients and techniques outside of our normal wheelhouse.

Bottle from Maruho, shared at the Salt Valley Beer Zen event. A dull pink orange with a sweet aroma. Medium to light bodied with w cocoa, nutty sweet flavor. Not much vanilla or raspberry to me. A let down due to the surprising amount of cocoa and lack of other discernible (to me at least) flavors, the ABV was well hidden though.

Draft. Pink-ish pour. Aroma of raspberry, mild tart and spices. Taste has juicy raspberry, creamy lactose, malt and some herbal spice. It’s allright, could use more Bruery.

Bottle. Pours hazy amber, medium creamy beige head, dissipate slowly, nice lacing. Aroma is raspberries, stems, vanilla, caramel. Flavor is medium sweet, light bitter, raspberries and light vanilla. Medium body, creamy mouthfeel. Amazingly OK.

Subtle raspberry and lots of malt. Kind of like a bitter with some malt. Not quite the fruit I expected like watery GMO strawberries. Bottle.

Last of this year’s case. Color: amber/pink/golden, small tight head. Fruity aroma, jelly jar. Taste is more of the big berry flavors, but some solid malts detectable, as well as a snap of hops at the finish. at 8% pretty big for a fruit beer, but more than just fake fruit flavors. Nice feel and texture too.

12 oz bottle poured. As strange as this one sounded, I absolutely love raspberry, so didn’t hesitate to try it. Copper orange pour with a lasting rocky head. A little weird that a lighter color beer has such a dominant chocolate note on the nose. Fun for sure. Vanilla and chocolate, with very little raspberry on that side, though it does come through in the flavor, but a lot sweeter than I would like. I suppose it’s supposed to be sweet, so I can’t give it too much grief for that. Definitely hits the flavor they were going for. Drinks lighter than the advertised imperial fruit beer. Some good things going on with this one, and it seems to get better as it goes. I like it.

Bottle from Wegman’s. Failed concept of a beer. Aroma is unpleasant raspberry. Taste has cocoa and boozy raspberry notes, and the finish is nasty astringent. Worst of this year’s Beer Camp collection!

Bottle. Raspberry, caramel malt, and straw aroma. Amber with small head. Mildly sweet raspberry, chocolate caramel malt, and moderately bitter hay/quinine flavor. Okay body. Boozy finish. Minimal fruitiness - on the harsh side.

12oz bottle. Pretty much what I would expect from a raspberry Bruery/Sierra beer in 12oz form ya know? Lactose definitely adds a slick sugary sweetness. Pleasant aroma. I really wouldn’t want to drink much of this. Still has a solid mouthfeel, no off tones. OK, unique. The vanilla seems fully unnecessary, while the cocoa adds faint nuances.
