The 18th beer release in our "Limited Edition" series (our 122nd and 123rd batch): The nice weather is so close you can almost feel it approaching! And what better accompaniment for breezy sunny days than a refreshing hoppy American wheat ale. While many associate wheat beers with Hefeweizen and other sweet, yeast-driven styles, the crisp, refreshing character of wheat malt also pairs amazingly well with fruity hops. We often release beers of a similar nature around this time of year (you may recall Shokyo Secchu, a collaboration with Shonan Beer, and 'Catcher in the Wheat'), and this time we decided to put the focus on interesting southern hemisphere varieties.
Hops from the southern hemisphere have gotten a lot of recognition lately for their uniquely tropical and fruity character. Most notorious are Nelson Sauvin from New Zealand and Galaxy from Australia. They have become so popular that even industrial brewers like Kirin have swept them up for use in limited release summer beers, causing a shortage of each throughout the world. For this beer, we decided to try two varieties that were new to us: Enigma and Vic Secret.
While both hops smelled great right out of the bag, we were surprised at how starkly different they were. Enigma smelled like fresh cut mangoes and it was mind boggling how much aroma the hops were giving off even before being used in the brew. Vic Secret was a bit tamer out of the bag but the passion fruit like aromas really came through in the flavour. The strong fruit and tropical character of these two hops are a perfect combination for an early summer wheat beer, so keep an eye out for this release!
Naming: Packed full of hops from the southern hemisphere, this beer is the perfect companion for watching the sun go down on a beach down under.

Tap at Gremlin. Nice. Light wheatiness, bit of citrus, good bitterness. Very enjoyable. Bit earthy.

Tap at Takumi. Very hazy pale gold, almost pastel, with lace. Bright citrus hop nose, oranges, some tropical fruit, lemon. Good fruit. Peppery, nice toast / bready malts. Good prickly carbonation but soft, full. Tropical and citrus fruit flavor. Seems to me that Chris is making a NE Pale Ale without calling it one, just to test the waters. It is very much in that line, although not as yeasty and cloudy, and the hops would have to be ramped up just a touch more. Very nice beer and great hot weather drinking.

Tap at the Mosaic Hostel KBC Event. Sunset Down Under 5% This hoppy wheat is a cloudy gold with a thick foamy white head and a hugely fragrant fruity hop bouquet. The taste is crackery wheat biscuits and sweet candyish tropical fruit hoppiness.
