Tap at Y. Market 3rd Anniversary. Caramel malts, chocolate, a touch of smoke. Pretty well balanced and finishing dry, but not the rich maltiness I want in a Scotch ale.

Chestnut color. Malty sweet nose but doesn’t show a ton of depth, some faint cherries and peat notes. Very light body for the 7.2%, malty, restrained sweetness, a touch of sour, peat and dirt exude in the mouth. Very interesting mouth and I think the one year has dried and smooth out the beer nicely. Still doesn’t have the depth I am looking for but the pear lingers in the end and that is nice

On tap at Devil Craft Hamamatsucho, Tokyo. Pours amber with white head. Malty, hoppy, some citrus notes, caramel, fruit, raisins. Sweetish with dry bitter finish. Medium bodied. Nice.

Tap at y. Market tap takeover at CBM jimbocho terrace. Tropical hop nose with peach, pineapple and citrus standing out. Some light chocolate and smoked caramel as it warms. Good hoppy bitterness on the palate with nice chocolatey malt flavors. Y. Market does it again: another hoppy take on a tired style. Diggin this one quite a bit. A bit of Mikan and and juicy hops. Wow another hopped up version of a classic style.

Meriken Scotch Ale 7.2% on tap at Molto. A orange-brown with a sweet piney aroma. It’s got a fairly full body with a balanced malt character and good piney hops. Very nice but as mentioned not terribly scotch ale like, more a hoppy red ale of some kind.

On tap at Devil Craft Hamamatsucho, Tokyo. Hazy amber to caramel colored with a fairly modest off-white head. Malty and caramelly aroma as expected, but with noticeable hoppy notes, hints of wood and smoke, some fruity notes, raisins and light citrus. Fairly sweet, but we’ll balanced, complex flavours with a nice and bitter finish. A bit unusual Scotch ale, but a nice one.
