Bottle from ShoulderBroken. Black with lace. Huge barrel aged whiskey nose, vanilla, Belgian spice, chocolate, licorice, orange. Great nose. Sweet, malty, boozy flavor, whisky, chocolate and spice. Pretty creamy, cola, tart berries, apples. A bit too much whiskey for me and a bit too hot, but very nice. Would like to give it some more time.

Pitch black color with dark brown color. Vegemite, oak, vanilla, dark chocolate, truffles, burnt raisins. Omg the nose is friggin out of this world. Low carbonation, oak, vanilla, slightly sour, dark fruit, raisins, burnt sugar and fairly sour.Oak, dark fruit, vanilla, dark chocolate and sour finish. OMFG, this is now the best beer in japan. The barrel aging is not over the top, but more balanced and well integrated which is not easy given that it has a Belgian yeast. There are many moving components that somehow all come together for this masterpiece.

Bottle from Tanakaya. Shonan BA Stout 10.5% A lovely dark inky black with a ruddy tan head of foam that lasts. The nose is full on whiskey barrel and savoury dark chocolate. Medium to full bodied with a spritzy round mouthfeel. The taste is tangy oak, whiskey & chocolate. Damn this is nice stuff, probably the best value barrel aged beer in Japan as it’s exceedingly well balanced and drinks like a dream.

Bottle from Tanakaya shared at "Tokyo Ratebeer Dark Tickers of The World Unite" event. Huge creamy chocolate nose with cacao nib, vanilla, oak, bourbon and a touch of soy sauce. Average carbonation with a medium body but really smooth and dangerously drinkable. Some caramel notes as it warms with more of the bourbon and vanilla sneaking out. Slight peppery hops on the finish with minor notes from the Belgian yeast towards the finish. This is wonderfully drinkable for the ABV and has lots of character. Should have bought a second bottle. --- Beer merged from original tick of Tengu Barrel Aged Belgian Stout on 04 Feb 2017 at 16:11 - Score: 9
