Flanders Reds may be called the Burgundies of Belgium, but we age our take on this complex style in red wine barrels for about a year with Brettanomyces induced secondary fermentation. A fresh batch will present spicier notes while older versions pick up more oak and yield cherry flavors. So we blended them figuring we’re better off presenting this exotic mélange simultaneously.

Reviewed from notes.
Bottle to tulip.
Appearance: mahogany colored with some transparent to lighter orangey tones closer to the sides of the glass, one and a half fingers of white foamy head dissipated to leave some light lace
Aroma: earthy to grassy tones, dark fruits, soured red apples, light vinegar, vinous (maybe more red wine-like) and woody/barrel character
Flavor: moderately funky to earthy sweet with the tart and sour tastes accompanying some dark fruity sweetness; mild barrel to earthy and funky finish
Texture: medium bodied, great as a sipper, some smoothness but active tart harshness on the tongue
Overall: I liked this for me and as far as I know pretty good for the style.

Muddy light brown, thin head. Lots of sweet whisky on the nose, maybe some bugs and definitely some wood. Strong, sweet, lots of boozy whisky notes, and woody brandy. Bit too yeasty for its own good.

Sample at What The Funk!? on 10/04/2017. The beer is a cloudy reddish-amber color with a medium thin off-white head that diminishes quickly to an outer ring. Stringy lacing. Aroma of tart fruit, oak, yeast and malt. Medium body with flavors of vinous oak, red fruits, yeast and biscuit malt. The finish is oaky with a fruit and yeast aftertaste. Pretty good overall.
