Flanders Reds may be called the Burgundies of Belgium, but we age our take on this complex style in red wine barrels for about a year with Brettanomyces induced secondary fermentation. A fresh batch will present spicier notes while older versions pick up more oak and yield cherry flavors. So we blended them figuring we’re better off presenting this exotic mélange simultaneously.

The Second Beer of my #6000 celebration (#2 of 13 - six beers on either side of 6000 and the milestone itself). Perfect ruby coloured body with a great pink coloured tint and a great, three centimetre tall tan head that stays afloat for quite a while. Aroma of cherries, raspberries, dry oak, a touch of alcohol, toffee, caramel, cognac and a little dose of hops, but the cherries and oak are the strongest by far - very nice. Medium-bodied; Assertive cherry and dry oak flavours with some cedar, a little grain and a hint of caster sugar near the tail end. Aftertaste is rich and fruity with a lot of very dry and almost musty flavours near the finish that also show a touch of alcohol. Overall, a nice and robust beer with a nice fruitiness, but better dry oaky and complex woodsey finish. Great to finally sample and well worth trying, if you can find this - and also possibly worth considering aging a bottle or two, depending on the price (on the higher side). I sampled this, wax, capped AND corked 37,5 cL bottle purchased from Total Beverage in Thornton, Colorado on 15-March-2016 for US$12,99 sampled almost exactly a year later on 05-March-2017. 2015 Bottle, Date of Bottling: 17-June-2015. Bottle Date: 17-June-2015 // Purchase Date: 15-March-2016 // Sample Date: 05-March-2017

Bottle. Pours a hazy amber with an orange hue, some sediment and a tan head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has a good amount of sour red fruit with a bit of acid and a strong barrel backbone. Flavor is a bit more acid forward with a good amount of barrel and a red fruit note.

Bottle. Salmon-crimson color, cloudy, with lace. Lovely lactic nose, cherries, vanilla, yogurt, wine. Creamy cherry flavor with vanilla and a nice level of tartness, though a bit simple. Dirty finish. Some wood. Nice, though the nose is best and could probably do with some age.

Waxed 375 from Capitol Beer in Sacramento, CA. Pours bright copper with a slight beige head. Aroma is oaky sour berry. Med body. Flavor is oaky cherry in a quite tart way. I think the barrel aging removes it from the range of Westvletteren sour red/browns, but there is certainly a kinship. So the flavor is sour/tart/oak/cherry. It is somewhat astringent. Mouth puckering. Quite a nice ale.

Draft - Balsamic and cherry with a bit barrel. Clear Amber with a decent off white head. Malty, light soured notes with a touch of cherry. Not bad, but doesn’t hold a candle to the staples.

On tap at Saraveza, pours a hazy orange amber with a small white head. Aroma and flavour of floral notes, lightly tart fruits, and farmhouse notes. Very well-balanced with some residual sweetness. Decent one, but not so enjoyable for me.
