Our second beer in the 'Kimagure' (or 'on a whim') series (also our 19th batch) has been released. This marks our first foray into "dark" beers. When temperatures start to drop at the beginning of fall, we tend to reach for beers with a bit more colour and malt complexity. But we aren't ready to give up our hoppy pale ales just yet. We've kept the bitterness around (we actually jacked it up a notch) but added in roasted malts to help lend a wonderful chocolate and caramel nose to the product. 'Aki no Kimagure' (or 'Fall on a whim') is a great compromise between rich malt character and refreshing hoppiness, a perfect companion for fall in Japan.

Tap at Mikkeller Tokyo. Light grapefruit and resin hoppiness, but dominated by malt. Biscuity, bit of caramel. Strangely smooth. Maybe it was a weird pour. Has a pleasant malty bite. Bit further down the hops appear. Nice. Little bit of minerals. Good stuff. New improved version sampled at Gremlin. Peppery, caramel, little malty sweetness. Grainy. Good stuff. Lightly spiky. Nice! Same score.

Tap at CBM Koenji. Pours a clear copper with a one-finger off-white head. Grapefruit, lemon zest and grass on the nose. Taste is light caramel with a medium body. Aggressively spiky bitter finish that felt quite jarring. Lingering pepper. Felt a little too bitter. --- Beer merged from original tick of Aki no Kimagure (秋の気まぐれ) (2015) on 30 Oct 2015 at 18:42 - Score: 7

On tap at KBC’s taproom launch, Aki no Kimagure pours a nice reddish color with a filmy beige head. The nose is malty pepper caramel with light hoppiness. The taste is a green piney bitterness with biscuity cookie notes. A fine beer that is somewhat English IPA like.

Tap at Komachi. Deep orange-brown, cloudy, with a fine head. Nose of earthy and grapefruit hops, chocolate, caramel. Hoppy amber ale. Nice caramel and chocolate malt profile, not too sweet, great earthy and citrus hops. Full body and rich malts. big flavor. It’s more a hoppy amber than a pale, and not my favorite style, but very well done, like a red IPA, if that is really a style. Could use a bit more hop flavor.
