Boulevard’s brewmaster Steven Pauwels and Ommegang’s brewmaster Phil Leinhart chose to collaborate on a Saison, a traditional Belgian farmhouse ale. We first brewed two separate batches of beer using our respective house yeasts, and then blended them post-fermentation, allowing both of our yeasts distinctive characteristics to come through.
Brewed with a mixture of pale malt, oats, rye, corn and wheat. Subtly spiced with coriander, lemon and orange peel. Perle was used as a bittering hop, with Safir and Saaz added for aroma. Each of the two batches was fermented with the unique house yeast from our respective breweries. The result is crisp and bready, with bracing hoppiness and a hint of spice lingering in the background. Join us in raising a glass to our new friendship. Cheers!

A nice, basic saison. Notes of toasted caramel, candied citrus peel, yeast, wheat. Medium bodied with fine carb. Lightly sweet finish, more yeast expression, semi-ripe citrus fruit. Fine.

750ml bottle. Unfiltered orange-amber body. Thinnish fading white head. Has some of the deeper malt aroma characteristics I associate with a dubbel, or belgian bruin almost. The best part about this beer is the light, fluffy mouthfeel. While there are some yeast tones, this really has a nice malt backdrop, giving it a solid balance. Not much in common with a Belgian or American Saison, almost more in line with a biere de garde. Now that I read the deScription, the depth makes sense. Unqiue beer, well made.

750 from Hegedorn’s. Spicy, fruity nose. Oranges, peaches and other stone fruit, coriander, green apples. Deep gold with orange tints, hazy, low head. Rich, fruity, estery flavor, a bit sweet but then finishes dry with medium bitterness. Nice enough. Not great.
