I didn’t find this as bad other others. Although I agree the end was a bit metallic and mainstream the first sip wasn’t too bad and it was fairly hoppy and decent take on the style. I’ve had much worse Session IPAs than this and it does become tiresome quickly, it is still not too bad.

Bottle from Family Mart. Pours a clear golden straw with a modest white head that dissipates fairly quickly. Nose has some nice grapefruit and passion fruit character but also mine had a fairly skunky nose which grew as it warmed up. Quite malty sweetness, but a rather thin watery body. I guess what little percentage of galaxy hops that were actually used were only for aroma, because there is no bitterness to this. More of a sessionable version of their standard Kirin with some aroma hops added. Cute label though. --- Beer merged from original tick of Grand Kirin Galaxy Hop on 25 Jul 2015 at 13:31 - Score: 3

Poured into a taster showing high filtration, bright golden hues and very sparse white foam. The nose shows round sweet malts with a very subtle citric note. The palate shows light carbonation and light bodied with a slightly gummy-candy (think guava or passionfruit) sweetness but mostly malty sweetness. Barely any IPA bitterness on the finish. Once again another Japanese company too afraid to stray too far away from its macro-lager roots to create anything noteworthy for craft beer drinkers.

Pours pale yellow, some white foam at first but it’s gone fast and what’s left looks quite watery and not too great. Aroma is not bad, nice fragrant hop aroma coming through, herbs and freshly cut grass. Bit of malty cardboard in the background. Taste has a bit of fresh grassy hops, initially very nice but becomes a bit lame in the aftertaste. Overall, not a bad beer and definitely sessionable. Doesn’t have any body to speak of though and feels quite watery.

Bottle. Lovely hop nose: grapefruit, grass, a bit of that Aussie cat piss, some minerals. Interesting and fragrant. Light bready malt. Medium gold, clear, fine medium head. Light body, low malt but rather sweet, nice fruity hops. Not enough bitterness, and not quite dry enough for a good session beer. But, pretty damn good, and the nose is awesome for anything from a major brewer. Decent stuff.

Bottle from Lawson’s in Kusatsu, served in a shaker pint. It pours a light gold that resembles a pilsner which I am starting to associate with Session IPAs. The bouquet is a zesty tropical fruit galaxy hop that is enticing. Light bodied with a bit less carbonation than I’d want. The taste is very minimal crackery light malts, somewhat fruity but it also has a bit of a floral twist to it. Pretty good, it definitely is one of the better ones in the Grand Kirin series and for less than 300 yen a good deal.
