Having brewed in South Boston since 1987, it was probably only a matter of time before we decided to commemorate St. Patrick’s Day (Evacuation Day - coincidentally a holiday - in Boston). It’s a beer that we thought would pair well with the late winter as well: malty enough to stand up to the cold but balanced enough to hint at Spring.
Description - Harpoon Celtic Ale features a deep ruby color, medium body, and a balanced malt bill created by Irish Ale malt and a touch of roasted barley. Rich in tradition and sessionable in character, Harpoon Celtic is the ideal Spring seasonal. Available on tap: January-March.

Toasty caramel malt aroma. Clear deep chestnut with a moderate beige head. Caramel, toast, light earthy hops flavor. LIght to medium body, moderate carbonation.

This is one bad brew. Smells bleachy, pours syupy brown without any tracing. Tastes like sour cream with some rust, hence the red colour. Was called Harpoon Celtic Red at Salt Hill Pub in Newport, NH. On tap.

bottle - Pours clear amber with a small off-white head. It has a mild caramel malt aroma. The flavor is sweet caramel malt and not much else. It’s toasted malt. It’s rather bland. It’s light bodied. Mediocre.

12 ounce bottle into pint glass, best by 5/15/2012. Pours crystal clear reddish orange color with a 1 finger dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a nice thin cap that lingers. Some good spotty lacing on the glass as well. Aromas of caramel, raisin, prune, molasses, banana, bubblegum, clove, floral, and toasted bread. Some pretty nice aromas with good strength and balance. Taste of caramel, pepper, bread, banana, bubblegum, raisin, molasses, floral, toasted malt, and yeast spices. Light bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, molasses, dark fruit, banana, clove, and pepper on the finish for a good bit. Very nice balance of flavors with good complexity. Medium carbonation and body; with a fairly creamy and slightly slick mouthfeel. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming after the finish present. Very easy and smooth to drink. Overall this is a very nice Irish red ale! Very nice amount of flavor and balance for being almost a session beer. I would have this again.

Refrigerated bottle poured into a glass. Pours clear amber with ruby hue and small off-white head. Little lacing, medium/light body, low carbonation, and nice caramel malt aroma. Taste is caramel malt, a little off taste in the middle, and finishes light bitter finish. Off tastes gets worse at it warms.

Copper color, modest head, no lacing. Aroma is cookie and toffee. Flavor similar, sweetish but with.a very watery palate. Unimpressive.

Unexpectedly positive result for a beer I figured would suck. Not a bad little malt bomb, with a quick slash of caramel that slowly tapers off into a dry finish. Very smooth; not something to seek out, but a good pinch beer. (4/19/09)

pours a clear rusty red. tastes of sweet caramel malts, some black tea, minor hopping, pleasant finish. pandering to their local clientel a bit but can’t blame them for that.
