Score
7.33
ABV: 8.0% IBU: 126 Ticks: 10
A big, crisp Ale that is hopped to the extreme. A Combination of Pale Ale, Bonlander Munich and Carapils Malts to which a very, very, generous amount of hops has been added gives a balanced 126 IBU beer.

Bomber. Malty, spicy nose or caramel, cinnamon, grass, English hop, cherry and ripe apples. Deep orange-amber color. Fruity flavor, lots of cherry. Light body. More like an English strong ale or un-aged old ale than an IPA, but nice.

Apple and pear aroma. Clear copper, medium yellow head. Whole apple flavor with the flesh, core, and skins easily discernible. Sweet malt base. Not terribly bitter except a kiss in the finish, and the high IBUs blend tastefully. I’d very much like to know which hops were used. No ordinary IIPA and wonderfully delicious.

Sampled at the 2nd annual Virginia Beer Festival at Capital Ale House Midlothian. Pours a medium bronze color with a thin head. Aroma is leafy, vegetal hops with caramel and other hoppy notes. Taste is bitter resiny hops with lots of citrus notes. Medium bodied.

2005 vintage (most likely) courtesy of footbalm. Pours crystal clear copper with thin white head. The aroma is muted pine and fir tree hoppiness and some malt sweetness way out in the background. The flavor has an initial burst of carbonation induced pine hop non bitterness. Pretty good for the age on this brew. The flavor also carries mildly roasted malt sweetness from beginning to end. I should compare this experience to a fresh sample at some point.

Deep amber coloured body with orange and ruby tints throughout. Nice tan head tops the beer perfectly. Aroma of perfectly fresh high a.a. hops citrus, alcohol, apricots and caster sugar. Medium to Full-bodied; Strong bitter hop flavour with caramel and dry malt throughout. Aftertaste nice and fresh - some hops linger, alcohol and malt there too. Overall, a really well made Imperial IPA-good flavour-not too sweet or too hoppy. Great to try - thanks Jon[r888710]! I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Norm’s in Vienna, Virginia on 26-September-2005.

Hazy amber with a creamy off-white head. Solid malt aroma accompanied by light flowery hops. The flavor is dominated by a smooth bitterness supported by a good malt base. Perhaps a bit one-dimensional. I’d like a bit more hop aroma and malt intensity.

22oz. Dark amber color. Very hoppy, I mean woah, there are a lot of hops. Citrus aroma abounds.

A hazy amber beer with an orange head. The aroma is sweet and very hoppy - with the hops giving it slight notes of citrus. The flavor is sweet with quite a lot of hops, giving it a citrus note, but there’s also notes of caramel from the malt. The end is hoppy dry.

2004 bottle provided by and shared with bucknaked, 4/28/2005. Pour is fabulous, brown-amber-golden colored body is unfiltered, with a yellowish/cream colored head, thick and very well-retained, plenty of lacing. Aroma is immediately strong and intense of lilacs, hugely bitter hops and lightly phenolic perfume. First sip and I’m exclaiming, "Damn, this is the best beer I’ve had in a while!" The perfumey alcohol and bitterness in the nose creates a floral/spicy hops concoction for a flavor, plenty of thick, almost syrupy malt. As it finishes, notes of pine sap begin to surface. . .uh oh, this is not going where I had hoped. The next sip gets even more sticky and sappy and finally after 4 or so sips, I can’t even finish my glass. The pine sap and HUGE resin flavor/consistency is just ridiculously unbalanced. This could be worse than Devil Dancer. I’m never a big fan of huge amounts of munich malt in barleywines or Double IPAs and this is no exception. A slight sourness to the malt, very sticky and mostly dry, with that sugary pils malt sweetness, a hint of candied oranges in there. Body is certainly full, can’t fault that, but the beer is so unbalanced and cloying it’s not even funny. Interesting experience, though.
