From the bottle. Light brown with a frothy to creamy head that lingers. Aroma of pine, orange peel, toffee. Pleasant. The hops are quite present compared to most brews of this style. Taste is moderate bitter with sweet caramel undertones. Finishes with an uptick in bitterness. Body is medium. Overall, a nice one.

Tasted at Bierproeverij Nieuw-Namen, a small but interesting beer festival held each year in April at less than a mile from where I grew up. One of the new additions to this Anglium range, a Belgian dubbel with – atypically for this style in the classic sense – emphasis on hoppiness. Thick, creamy, dense, frothy, egg-white, lacing head over a hazy copper-tinged bronze coloured beer. Aroma of toasted peanuts, dried orange peel, dandelion leaves, white pepper, brown honey, green beans, peaches, hard butterscotch candy, mandarin. Fruity onset, estery in a cleanish way, sweetish with notes of peach and dried banana, red apple note, spritzy carb, bit resinous mouthfeel. Caramelly and lightly toasty malt body with residual honeyish sweetishness but in a noble, restrained kind of way, moving forward to a floral, rooty and citrus peel-like hop bitter finish, in which a subtle yet recognisable hint of the used Mosaic pops up; ends with lingering caramel and toasty maltness as well as rooty hop bitterness, well in balance with each other. This brand basically continues Belgian beer traditions and updates them in a subtle way by making use of foreign innovations, in this case New World hops – not the most exciting approach perhaps even within Belgium, but this beer for sure is technically well-executed, tasty and in perfect balance, while at the same time challenging the old dubbel style a bit by increasing hop bitterness. I quite liked this one.

Bruin bier met mooie stevige schuimkraag die lang blijft staan. Smaak is bitter hopig en ietwat fris zoetzuur met sporen van zoethout en karamel.

T: malty, bit caramel, light tropical fruitiness, decent bitterness on the palate, light earthy, tangerine, grapefruit, very nice balanced, interesting hoppy beer, medium to full body, medium carbonation, enjoyed, 33cl bottle from Prik & Tik Leuven.

Huge yellow head, dense and unlikely stable, leaving shards of lace over hazy red-amber beer, finely carbonated. Very aromatic nose with fragrant fruity hops, lychee, rosewater, garden herbs, peach. Again hoppy character, I’d say mainly New World hops; ever so slight sourish vegetable - sorrel - and some discreet yeastesters. Warming up, caramel- and other light-coloured malts emerging. Titillatingly carbonated, creamy head, medium bodied; long lasting flavours. Surprisingly good!
