Faced with the delightful challenge of using Stella, a new high alpha hop from Australia, the Thornbridge brew team thought this would work well in a nice hoppy Brown Ale.

With Browne we have created a medium intensity beer in both flavour and aroma. It has a juicy fruit and floral aroma upfront but nice hints of roasted and caramel-like aromas come through. This juicy aroma comes from the use of a single hop called Stella which we used exclusively in the hopback – or as we know it the Hopnik and we developed this beer so that 90% of the total bitterness would come from our Hopnik addition.

Cask at Euston Tap. Light brown amber colour with a medium sized creamy beige head. Aroma is a bit creamy malty, but nutty and slightly citrus. Slight cloudy look and quite full bodied. Very smooth and taste is a bit caramelly and a bit sweet with a subtle bitter finish. Very nice!

Cask. Sheffield Tap. Light amber. Soft haze. Thick, dense, off white head. Nose has some caramel malts. Some earthy berry. Taste is mostly sweet, with a light, earthy dryness. Light body. Low carbonation. Pinch of bitterness to finish. Not a deal going on here, but it’s drinkable enough.

(Cask at Kitty?s, 20170212) The beer poured dark brown and clear. Its head was medium sized, bit sparse and it lasted long. Aroma had malts, caramel and grass. Palate was medium bodied with low carbonation. Flavours were sweetness, caramel, grass, malts and bitterness. Aftertaste was hoppy, malty and bitter. A nice brown ale with good drinkability.
