Depth-Charged Double Bastard Ale Aged in Kentucky Bourbon Barrels & Northeast Ohio Maple Syrup Barrels

Evenings trying to forget the crushing mediocrity of one’s life are typically the main driver to late-night breakfast plates at unforgivingly overlit diners stacked with industrialized, frozen-dumped-in-a-fryer “food.” An interlude between sophomoric late-night antics, questionable decisions and inevitable morning regret. That’s not how I play it. For those who know how to grab life by the horns*, however, this bottle pairs even better with accomplishment, life lived out loud, and well-timed moves that often appear as luck to those not paying attention. A specifically designed midnight brunch feast with like-minded folks who not only have their wits about them but actually have wits, and an artfully prepared feast sets the more appropriate stage for this beer. The bottle is worth a special occasion. Create yours to accompany it.

*Touch mine, though, and I'll provide you with the deepest possible understanding of the word "regret."

500 ml bottle at the DC Ratebeer Tasting. Poured a hazy, kind of light cola brown color with a small light tan head. Aroma was some boozy dark fruits, caramel malts. Light sweet syrup notes. Alcohol is mostly smooth, with very little boozy burning notes that I expected.

Unclear, amber to brown colored, small beige head, not very lasting. Aroma is of malt, caramel, dried fruit and toffee, some coffee and herbal notes, bit oaky, alcohol. Taste is medium to very sweet malt, caramel and toffee, coffee with medium bitterness, bit oak, some herbal notes, dry finish with a touch of alcohol and warmth. Medium to full bodied, soft carbonation, creamy-syrupy.

I love Depth-Charged Double Bastard, but was skeptical of how the original’s coffee background would work. All I can say is, "Wow!" The three play together nicely, with all underlying rather than battling for dominance. So smooth for a big bourbon-barrel beer.

Pours brown and hazy, not much carbonation. Nose is just blowing me away - it has lots of bourbon, burnt maple syrup and booze. Taste is vey similar in the sense that there are many things going on, sweet and alcoholic, barrel-aged character out in the open. Just decadent, burnt caramel bourbon goodness.

Bomber, shared by Ian at Jonathan’s bachelor party. Dark, clear bronze color, with a small, creamy, tan head. Standard Bastard aroma, with notes of maple, oak, vanilla, pine, and rye. Sweet and malty at first, with strong bitterness. Mellowed appreciably by the barrel, with a good warming booziness. Very heavy body, slick, and astringent. This is a really nice treatment. Delicious, aromatic, and still very aggressive.
