Our brewing history begins with this beer. And the history of strong beer in Bavaria – it was the Paulaner monks who invented this bottom-fermenting double bock. We have been brewing the Salvator for over 375 years – always according to the original recipe, which has been continuously refined over the years. The head is the colour of caramel and the beer is chestnut brown, combined with a seductive flavour of chocolate to give a pleasing intensity on the palate. Along with this comes the finest Munich malt, rounded off by a light note of hops in the background. Often imitated but never duplicated: The father of all double bock beers, whose names always end in “-ator”!

11.2 oz. bottle.
AROMA: Very sweet with scents of bread, brown sugar, and caramel.
APPEARANCE: Pours an opaque, orange-brown with a dirty-tan head that dissipates quickly and minimal lacing. Overall, its appearance is a bit on the "muddy" side.
TASTE: Tastes almost exactly like it smells ... sweet, with notes of brown sugar, malt, and caramel.
MOUTHFEEL: Full-bodied with a slick and creamy texture. Carbonation seems a bit low for a beer of this type. There is not much of a finish at all.
OVERALL: This is what I would consider a "typical" doppelbock. Which is to say, it is a pretty tasty beer. But there's nothing to make it stand out from all the other ones. Basically, if you put one in my hand, then I will drink it and graciously thank you for it (while asking you for another). However, if I go to a bar, then I'm not going to remember that I've ever had this beer, much less that I actually enjoyed it.

Aroma has raisin and porto. Full bodied beer, sweet and malty. Porto, peach and hopflavors. Alcohol present. Well made doppelbock with a good flavor, but no specific characteristics that makes it a classic.

Bottle at Antarabangsa, Penang. Poured a clear medium amber colour. The aroma is grainy caramel malt, woody hop. The flavour is moderate bitter light sweet, with a rich, sweet toffee malt, fruity, slightly boozy, light floral hop bitter palate. Medium bodied with average to soft carbonation.

Bottle from Edeka, Rothenburg. Pours hazy dark amber-brown with a lasting, small, unstable, frothy, tan head. Aroma of prune, raisin, red apple, almond, dried banana, dark honey, brioche, brandy, 'carré confiture', tea leaves. Taste is medium fruity sweet, notes of raisin, dried banana & red apple on bready & even cake-like malty base, caramelly & nutty edges, only light herbal bitter with tea leaves & some pepper. Dryish, herbal hoppy finish, lingering dried fruit, cake, and a good dash of warming brandy alcohol. Medium body, slick-oily texture, fizzy carbonation. Satisfying Doppelbock, but the difference in class with Ayinger Celebrator is noticeable.
