750 ml bottle. Dark ruby color with a thin cap of white head, not much lace. Aroma is toffee, rye malt and a pleasant fruity essence.

Flavor begins with a fruity hops leading into a dusty rye malt and hints of dark fruit with maybe a hint of anise. Earthy tones in the backside. Medium body with a light watery texture. Really simple, kind of one dimensional overall.

750ml bottle picked up in Columbus OH. Deep unfiltered burgundy-brown body. Foamy, glass lacing off-white/beige head. The NZ hops are muted a little by the rich Rye malt, but they still manage to give a mellow fruity balance. A really well done beer, almost an Imperial Brown in style. Rich caramel and rye malt tones. Remains drinkable even though it is obviously pretty big. Great stuff, would have loved to try this on tap.

GABF 2013. Pours a hazy brown appearance with a light brown head. Twangy veggie notes in the aroma with a bit of booze and light tropical fruits. Fairly strong, disjointed flavor with some spicy rye, white grape, and some fruity notes. Disappointing.

Banter, Brooklyn tap ($8): Pours dark brown with a creamy beige head. Aroma is dark fruits, rye, and Belgian yeast. Taste is fruity (but dried fruits) and bitter towards the end. Somewhat sweet, but it is not excessively so. Body is somewhat thick, but doesn’t stick to the mouth too much. Some spiciness. Good.

Sampled on draft at 3R6P this beer poured a murky mahogany color with a medium sized foamy beige head that lingered and left good lacing. The aroma was woody, nutty and had hints of pepper and smoke. The flavor was bitter, woody, oaky, nutty and had touches of tobacco, smoke, wheat, dark fruits, anise, perfume and a boozy undertone. Long bitter wood, smoke, perfume and tobacco finish. Medium body. Decent.

Pours deep mahogany into a Sam glass. Pancake head with good retention recedes leaving thin sheets. Chocolate, caramel and clove aromas. Medium bodied with sharp clove upfront turning to nutmeg before the lasting bitter earth and back to clove finish.
