Pours black with a smallish tan head. There’s some decent lacing. The aroma is coffee, chocolate and old pennies. The stout flavors are actually pretty ok in the aroma, but the metallic note hurts things significantly. I may as well be drinking out of the jar that I use for loose change. Cardboard, dehydrated milk, rusty iron, burnt bread and mineral hops all make a strong showing in the taste department. It starts with some weak sweetness and finishes with a rough combination of roast and bitterness. It’s just all wrong. There’s also a bizarre flavor that I associate with hospitals, like a medicinal disinfectant. Mouthfeel is thin and weak.

I used to drink a good bit of this back in the 90’s but have not seen much of it recently. Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a black color with a medium sized foamy brown head that lingered and left some lacing. The aroma was dryish and bitter with notes of coffee and vanilla. The flavor was dryish, bitter and roasty with undertones of coffee and vanilla and a long roasty and bitter finish. Fairly full bodied. Decent.

From a 375ml bottle on 14/1/2011. Doesn’t make any express reference to Carlton on the label but this is a notable beer - a quality beer brewed by CUB! Smells of roasted malt and bread, with a touch of vanilla. The flavours are the typical roasted malt, coffee and dark chocolate combo.Relatively sweet but nicely balanced with a lingering bitterness. The body is medium and palate slightly creamy. A good, solid stout.

Bottle from Kahn’s. Pours black with tan head. Nose is roasted malts, coffee, chocolate. Taste is utterly lacking. Some roasted chocolate malts and coffee with little spice finish. Thin body.

Big bottle o’ beer. Pours thin, yet dark with a foamy tan head of a finger and a half. Aromas are blah... kind of a roasty malt with coffee and vanilla. Flavor is pretty similar... a bit of a coffee edge up front that transitions into a cream and vanilla mid palate before fading back into a slightly peaty finish.

750 ml bottle from Bottle Trek. Dark brown/black color with a reasonable tan head. Toasted, but not burnt, malt aroma. Rather thin bodied with moderate carbonation. Flavor is slightly sour toasted malt, with coffee, chocolate and a touch of dark fruit. Maybe toffee. Finish is rather bitter and dry. Decent drink.

(Bottle 37,5 cl) Courtesy of highlandlad. Pours completely opaque black with a nice, beige head. Aroma of alcohol and roasted malt. Medium body, roasted malt accents and alcohol - surprisingly alcoholic considering its only moderate alcohol. Weak smoky touches. Almost no bitterness. 310507

Bottled. A pitch black beer with a thin brown head. The aroma is sweet malty with notes of roasted malt and chocolate, as well as light notes of soy sauce. The flavor is sweet malty with notes of hard roasted malt as well as lighter notes of chocolate, oranges, and soy sauce, leading to a dry bitter and still malty end.
