Part of the BrewDog Collabfest 2013

To say thank you to the incredible brewing teams who have welcomed our bar staff into their breweries, we invited them to come to ours. Eleven brewers turned up at our Ellon HQ for a tour, a taste of a few new beers and – of course – to make one of their own.

The beer will be a 5.2% rye pale ale but here’s the twist: it uses 12 different hops, chosen by 12 different brewers. As well as choosing the hop variety, they chose at what stage of the boil their hop was added. This meant that they could decide which characteristics of the hop to bring out – bitterness, flavour or aroma.

This is the most varieties of hops we’ve ever used in a single brew at BrewDog, and we'd like to thank our friends again for helping us push the bounds of the UK beer scene.

The 12 breweries were BrewDog, Lovibonds, Weird Beard Brew Co., Tempest Brewing Co, Arbor Ales, Fyne Ales, Hand Drawn Monkey, Cromarty Brewing Co., Quantum, The Durham Brewery, Buxton Brewery & Beavertown.

Tap at O’Haras. Golden honeyish color, small white head, some lace. Aroma has gooseberry, some fruityness. Medium-bodied. Fruity, hoppy. Standard but quite sessionable. Simple for being 12 mash.

Draught @ William K. Kurvi
Aroma is fruity and nice with hops, some gooseberry bush and caramel. Flavour has some resiny tones, fruity hops, minerals and caramel. Aroma was promising but flavour is too straightforward and thin.

Draught @ William K Kurvi, Helsinki

Pours dark orange with a smooth white head. Aroma of grassy hops, fruits, caramely malts. Taste is smooth, slightly watery and bitter with notes of fruits, rye, grassy hops and berries. Finish is sweetish, slightly bitter and watery with some notes of fruits and berries, touch of sweet rye notes. Okay, a bit unbalanced pale ale.

(Keg at William K Kurvi, 20140206) The beer poured amber and clear. Its head was medium sized and white. Aroma had fruitiness, tangerine and peach. Palate was medium bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were fruitiness, grass, malts, sweetness and bitterness. Afteraste was hoppy and bitter. A nice and balanced pale ale. I couldn’t tell how many hops were used.
