My ale-style mead. These were popular during the Napoleonic period, and I think for good reason. Traditionally, ales would be flavoured with various herbs in a mix called a gruit. The gruit for beer consists of hops, for example. I have chosen a mix of culinary herbs to give it a different flavour to beer, because variety is the spice of life. This is not a cross between ale and mead (braggart), but a spiced mead ("metheglyn").

This drink is very refreshing, has a light body, a sweet and fragrant nose, with hints of citrus, and is perfect for a long drink. Can be drunk warm like a traditional English beer, or cold over ice.

750ml bottle from Sparrowhawk online. Pale yellow colour with a fizzy white foam head that quickly dissipates away. Aroma of honey, sugary, flowery, alittle spice. Taste is light floral, with honey & citric hints, and some ginger. Watery mouthfeel, light bodied, spritzy carbonation, dry finish. Quite drinkable.

Bottle from producer’s own stall at Salisbury Christmas Market. My first mead arrived nearly colourless with an obvious fizz. I was worried that mead would be sweet and sickly but that wasn’t the case with this one. It was floral up front- maybe elderflower? - with fresh herbs coming through. There wad a hint of lemon before some light sweet honey showed in the finish. The elements all balanced against each other to make a drink that was wonderfully light and refreshing, yet at the same time tasty and quite complex. I suspect mead purists will criticise the low ABV, but I was very impressed by this and now want to try more mead.
