12 oz. bottle from Whole Foods Charlottesville, batch 8738. Dark brown color with a small head. Fruity aroma with some brown-sugar like malti notes along with maybe some candi sugar? Very dark taste with brown sugar, molasses, coffee, roasted grain. Full bodied.

(Bottle 35,5 cl) Pours an opaque black with a creamy, beige head leaving some lacework. Sweetish, fruity, plum-like nose. Rather full-bodied with sweetish, roasted malt, some dried fruit - prunes. A slightly burned edge. A rather unusual beer - somewhere in the borderland between a stout and a belgian ale. 280507

Bottled. A pitch black beer with a thin brown head. The aroma is sweet with notes of vegetables, and roasted malt, as well as light notes of alcohol. The flavor is sweet malty with notes of vegetables, alcohol, and hard roasted malt, the alcohol leaves a slight burn on the tongue. No where near an Abbey dubbel in my universe - my guess was a cross between a stout and a spice/herb/vegetable beer.

12oz bottle that poured out dark and very stout like with light brown head. I noticed a brown slick of sediment left behind in the bottle. Initially the aroma is stout like with malt roastiness, sweetness and smoke. Then I get a bit of spice and yeast and alcohol and faint lemony tartness and some funk. Like the aroma the flavor starts with rich molasses sweetness, some malt roastiness and some fruitiness. Then near midway I get some tart notes along with a hint of Lambic funk and a sense of alcohol. As the finish of the taste approaches a plum note becomes more pronounced. Once that begins to fade I get a burlap sack sense. Into the after taste a very nice stout flavor returns with sweet molasses mixed with highly roasted to burnt malts. Very interesting brew with lots and lots going on.

(Bottle, Oliver Twist, Stockholm) Dark brown, almost black, colour with brief, frothy, brown head. Roasted, malty, rather spicy nose with notes of liquorice, yeast and hints of rubber. Roasted, spicy taste with liquorice, dark chocolate, freshly ground coffee and slighty vinous, yeasty notes. Rather short finish, slightly thinner than expected. Not one of their best, but very nice. However, seems to lack something extra.

Almot opaque black color, small tan head. Strong tar and smoke in the nose. Full bodied, licorice, tar and smokey malts in the flavor, but quite simple palate. Kind of sticky mouthfeel. It’s a good brew, but too simple for my liking.

Bottle. Deep brown, almost black with a hint of red. Late developing 2 inch head, with some legs. Aroma is roasted malt and fruit sweetness. Initial taste was mostly the roasted coffee, though there was some fruit (apple or pear) sweetness there too. Body was nice on this, though would expect a bit for texture for an Abbey Dubbel. My only confusion on this beer is style. It almost tasted like a stout blended with an amber ale, with Belgian overtones. Interesting brew.

Bottle. Chocolate caramel malt and bitter grass aroma. Dark black-brown color with small head - pours like a stout. Sweet chocolate malt and licorice flavor. Plastic aftertaste. Better than the first bottle I had but still not great.

Thanks to SS for this one. The color of this one approaches black. Average sized, creamy brown head. Typical Belgian aroma, fruity, vinous. Raisins and rum. Flavor follows the aroma. Sweet with a dry finish.
