Duchessa, our spelt beer, is a typical product from our territory. Inspired by traditional Belgian Saisons, it persuadues you with its pleasentness and fresh elegance. The creamy and abundant head releases fruity (banana, pineapple, tropical fruit) and floral aromas which are animated by a slight pepperiness. Its fine carbonation, slight acidity and moderate hop profile make for a fresh beer that is never overpowering and is pleasant from start to finish.

375 ml bottle into tulip glass, best before 3/2013. Pours moderately cloudy golden orange color with a 1-2 finger dense white head with good retention, that reduces to a thin lace cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of lemon, pear, grape, apple, clove, pepper, bread, light honey, floral, grass, herbal, and yeast earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of fruity/spicy yeast ester and malt notes; with good strength. Taste of lemon, pear, apple, grape, pepper, bread, light honey, clove, grass, floral, herbal, light nuttiness, and yeast earthiness. Lingering notes of light fruits, bread, pepper, clove, light honey, grass, herbal, light nuttiness, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a bit. Very nice balance and complexity of malt and fruity/spicy yeast ester flavors; with good flavor robustness and no cloying sweetness after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth and crisp mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with no warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a very nice saison style. All around good balance and compexity of malt and yeast ester flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink. A very enjoyable offering.

Duchessa in a typical 330ml bottle which is unusual from Birra del Borgo, 5.8% from Rakuten. Quite dark for a saison, kind of a dark orange/amber gold. This is evident in the aroma with a sweet caramel malty aroma in play. The flavor is sweet malty with a hint of spiciness from the saison yeast but overwhelmingly grainy. I am not sure where they were going with this but as a saison it is a miss. The flavor profile reminds me of a cheap English Ale. I don’t recommend it, it’s pretty drinkable but much lower quality than Birra del Borgo’s other beers, check those out instead. As a beer I’d give it a 3 as a saison 2.3.

Keg at BrewDog Camden. It pours golden yellow with a thick white head. The nose earth, faint farmyard, hay, underlying sweetness, herbal, spice and bread. The taste is dough, light toast, spice, herbal, light citrus and faint floral notes with a dry finish. Medium body and moderate coronation. Run of the mill saison really. So-so.

Bottle at home - May ’12. Slightly clouded pale orange colour with a good inch of fluffy white head. Floral hop aroma, yeast, spice and a little citrus fruit. Grassy hop bitterness, straw, caramel sweetness, light malt. Light to medium body and in carbonation. This beer didn’t scream out ’saison’ to me ! Drinkable but also forgetable!
