Smoked porter - the lovely concept set in motion by Alaskan many years ago - by En Stoemelings, one of the 'nouvelle vague' craft brewers in and around Brussels. Regularly shaped, medium thick, pale greyish beige, mousy head slowly showing gaps here and there but generally very well-retaining, black robe with misty wine-red hue, only visible near the bottom of the tasting glass and around the edge. Aroma of toasted walnuts, unsugared black chocolate, smoked herring or smoked mackerel, biltong, bonfire, wet leather, cigars, quite pronounced iron shavings, nutmeg, green peppercorns, tofu, touch of fig. Clean, rounded onset, some basic dried fig- and plum-like sweetishness but restrainedly so, mild cured meat-like umami, softish carb, dull sourish undertone - everything is well in place here, continuing into a slick, smooth, relatively softly carbonated but still somewhat mineral-edged, dry-caramelly and walnutty maltiness, a bit thinnish perhaps but clean and to the point, with a clear metallic edge that does not truly bother me in this type of beer. Pronounced toasted, bit coffeeish bitterness in the end but still with some lingering caramelly sweetishness, with a nice, not too overpowering but sufficiently outspoken smokiness built on top, with vague impressions of smoked bacon, smoked eel and cigar ashes, but remaining elegant despite being obvious enough. The play of umami-like smokiness, roasted bitterness and nutty-caramelly sweetishness is spiced with a pinch of peppery hops and lasts medium long, quite dry and quenching in the end. A smooth, clean, purely 'internationally' styled craft beer of technical accomplishment, Alaskan Smoked Porter is very close here; probably ages well, too. Nice one!

Medium, rather stable yellowish-beige head, irregular, over virtually black beer. Very strong smoked meat or -fish nose, Maillard, bit hot metalslug, phenols, smokesalt. Severe. Much drier in the mouth, ashes, tobacco, woodfire flakes. In the finish, (too) smoked haddock or mackerel. Lightly burning MF, dry; good carbonation, light to medium body. Excellent with cured meat or fish (I tried!)
