GUSHER ALERT!
Clear blond yellow beer, big solid creamy white head, pretty stable, adhesive, leaving a nice lacing in the glass. Aroma: pretty yeasty, pears, oxidized, orange peel, malty, some honey. MF: ok carbon, medium to light body. Taste: oxidized, decent bitterness, orange peel, some honey, sweet and malty, some cloves. Aftertaste: a bit spicy, some cardamom, oxidized, orange peel, honey. Meh.

Clear blond beer, creamy off-white head, pretty stable, bit adhesive, leaving some lacing in the glass. Aroma: orange peel, bit yeasty, floral, more yeast, pears, sweetish impression. MF: ok carbon, medium to light body. Taste: very sugary and sweet, yeast, not much else, maybe some marzipan. Aftertaste: sweet, little malty, cookie dough, sugary, meh, orange peel, not good at all…

20/09/2018 @home - 33cl bottle from a trade with jerre. Clear golden, big foamy white head. Nose is malts, spice (tripel), bit fruits, bit yeast. Taste is malts, sweetness, bit honey, bit hops, dry soft bitter spicy ending

Another commissioned local Belgian blonde from some hobby brewer, this time celebrating the village of Sinaai near Sint-Niklaas. Steini bottle from Fontana in Sint-Niklaas. Very thick and frothy, egg-white, stable and closed, tightly ’membranous’ lacing head over an initially clear, pure golden blonde beer with a ’fog’ of translucent yeast bits throughout. Aroma of green sour apples, chewing gum, iron, banana candy, camomile, clay, baking powder, old cardboard, wet newspapers, very old rubber, grass, ’jenever’ without the alcohol, dough, unripe gooseberries, raw rhubarb, unripe pear, hand soap, a hint of bath foam even, old white bread, dust. Crisp, fairly ’clean’ onset, lots of green apple and raw rhubarb acetaldehyde matched with an equally forceful amount of bubblegum-like isoamylacetate, hints of raw pineapple and hard Conf�rence pear, some unripe gooseberry sourishness but the banana ester sweetness prevails, fizzy carbonation but with ’small’ bubbles so not too numbing yet still adding a lot of mineral water-like effects; medium thick, smooth body. Cereally, sweetish, bit ’white’ bready malt middle, ongoing fruitiness of banana and green apple, spicy phenols but still within the limits of what I can accept as being ’normal’ for this style; ends quite bland, a dash of grassy hop bitterishness, lingering pale malt sweetishness and - more than anything - lingering chewing gum ester, with a ’field flower’ impression retronasally from the hops. Quenching and technically decent, but that is where the story ends for me: clearly intended as a top-fermented alternative to industrial pale lager, with a dash more bubblegummy sweetness to please the masses; feels like I’m having something from the (late) previous century, this could have been brewed fourty years ago with the exact same profile. I will grant it an ’okay’ score for its technical perfection - the merit of De Graal’s long-standing expertise - but conceptually this is clearly utterly boring. Beers like this really should not be made anymore today given the global craft beer revolution, but I guess the average Belgian consumer still holds on to them - a lot of educational work is afoot.
