A sophisticated beer for the advanced connoisseur. It was once brewed by the English as a gift for the Russian tsarina. Today craft brewers all over the world enjoy this style because it allows them to live out all their creativity. We do this by stuffing our Imperial Stout with hops and storing it in barriques for six months before bottling it.
Vanilla and herbs, especially thyme, mingle. A gentle oily impression is followed by pine and a reoccurring herbal bouquet of thyme. The finish is soft but dry with lingering aromas of wood and black pepper.

Bottle at Erzbierschof MC. Pours dark brown. Aroma is very sweet, some roast malts, candy like. Body is heavy, sweet, but there’s not a whole lot of flavours. Palate is sweet, but still no flavours. Disappointing.

Tap at the brewpub. Beer in the glass deep black, almost no head. Heavy malty aroma. Starts intense malty, oily, not as strong as exspected. Finish more alcoholic, warming, not as roasty-malty as other Imperial Stouts. Warming, well balanced finish. Nice!

Bottled. Deep brown colour with a mediumsized beige head. Aroma is roasted malts, some ripe fruit, raisins, alcohol and some liquorice to it. Flavour is quite similar with some herbs, mild coffee and some nice fudgelike notes. Alcohol does kick in quite much in the finish, making it rather sweet.

660ml bottle at home. Appearance is completely black with some head which dissipates quickly though. Not too much carbonation, mocha coloured foam. Aroma is unusual for an impy, especially the sour aroma. This makes it rather refreshing. Apart from this there are dark malts and some spiciness. Flavour is similar (and similarly unusual!). Sour and quite bitter, thick mouthfeel, quite refreshing, spicy and very herbal. Weird imperial stout but kinda grows on you!
