Bottle. Brown with a large pale beige head. 3+ Doughy and spicy aroma with some chocolate and dried fruit. So it tastes. There's not a lot of depth but it's partially made up for by being not too sweet -- so there's a decisiveness to the moderately bitter spicy finish that works nicely. Not bad.

Fles thuis geprobeerd met LiekevdV. Het is een bruin bier met een beige schuim. Het heeft een moutige wat chocolade achtige geur. De smaak is moutig, zacht zoet, caramel, en rozijnen achtig.

Bottle from Carrefour, Sint-Niklaas - thank you, Anke! Pours hazy dark brown with a lasting, thin, frothy, tan head. Aroma of caramel, brioche, Ersatz chocolate, salted peanut, fig, red apple, cake, tea leaves. Taste is medium malty sweet, restrained dark fruits (fig, raisin), sourish brambleberry underneath too, quite some red apple & dried banana, quickly balanced by bitter herbs, nuts & spices, vaguely toasty, somewhat metallic too. Dryish, herbal hoppy finish, lingering brioche & caramel maltiness, dark fruits, touch of iron and a subtle note of warming brandy-like alcohol. Medium body, creamy texture, lively carbonation. Enjoyable Dubbel, would be better without its roughest edges.

Thick dense darker yellow head, quite stable, over deep red-shot dark brown beer. Speculaasherbs, milkchocolate, dark malts, lots of melanoidins, plywood. Yeasty flavour, sweetish. Faint chocolate & woody notes, bit of liquorice and indeed lots of melanoidins. Finish has the peculiar kind of acidity one gets often in the aftertaste of black chocolate. Medium bodied, quite slick, good carbonation. Stereotypical. At least it's quite drinkable.

The third Mokkebier, a dubbel brewed at Pirlot. Steinie bottle from De Vidts in Sint-Niklaas. Very thick, frothy, foamy, yellow-tinged egg-white, thickly papery lacing, stable head over an initially clear, mahogany brown beer with vermillion hue, turning misty with sediment. Aroma of melting caramel, dried prunes, soapy coriander, very clear and way too strong, head stabilizing iron (the 'hand test' says it all), dry tree branches, vague chewing gum, unripe pear, walnut, brown bread crust, old coffee grounds, dried thyme, field flowers, dust, straw. Restrainedly sweetish onset with sourish edge, accentuated by quite sharp, even lightly numbing, fizzy carbonation, supple mouthfeel, hints of dried prunes, slight baked banana and unripe peach but subdued in its esteriness; medium thick, bread crust-, cereal- and hard butterscotch-like malt body with a very vague bitter chocolatey touch to it as well as far less vague, even obtrusive iron as described in the nose; toasty bitterish tail, retaining its caramelly sweetish character but adding a floral, lightly peppery hop note, the bittering powers of which remain limited. Most of the 'end bitterness' keeps coming from toasted malts, with a dash of hoppy spiciness thrown in as well as the obligatory coriander effect (spicy-sweet soapiness). The metallic effect lingers, flanking the 'caramelliness' and toastiness, softly bittering but remaining sweetish too. Bitterness is slightly more strong in the end than sweetness, lasting for a while, with even a very late (after swallowing) coffee-like flavour to it, convincing enough to make me wonder if a pinch of coffee hasn't been added. Decent as such, apart from that iron addition, which has been used by Belgian breweries all too often in the past - but Pirlot apparently still does it. Dryish dubbel, probably taking Westmalle Dubbel as an example, but feeling more metallic than that. Acceptable but I think this is a bit of a step backwards compared with Mokke Blond and Mokke Ros. I've encountered more enchanting brunettes...
